fiction in general is more highly digital. it can be a literary novel because the reader review you say i would like to read that. you don't have to go anywhere or do anything. you just push a button so we have found commercial and also memoir. i think because a memoir reads like fiction in that it's linear at the beginning and decoded the end. there's not a lot of referring back. the ones that are the least digital other than children's books and cookbooks are serious nonfiction. i think it's because -- i read articles about when you read you will remember something and you want to go back and look any remember what was on the bottom left-hand page. you can't do that digitally so the whole referring back and forth that happens with serious nonfiction is much more difficult to do digitally. so anything that is linear is a linear read seems to be the thing that has the highest digital sales. >> guest: i am vice president designer of digital content development. we make e-books and digital products for all of simon & schuster's

i was wondering if you ever entertained the idea of branching out into fiction? >> no. that question is such an insult to nonfiction, just because something is true, no, i'm not a liar. there are tons of other liars whose books you're welcome to buy here. the thing i love about nonfiction is it does not have to seem plausible. nonfiction is about things, that can't be true, but it is. fiction you have to write these stories that seem like it could have happened to people that might exist. you don't have to do that when you're writing about a weirdo like abraham lincoln, or even in this hawaiian story, one thing that happens, as the first missionaries are leaving boston harbor, they are en route to christianize the hawaiians, while they are on the water the new hawaiian king decides to abolish the religion. you put that in one of your fiction-type stories, that's going to seem like, no, that's too easy. but then the missionaries show up and they get the news, guess what, the old religion has been banned and outlawed and there's nothing to replace it. here we just sailed
