now, i did make it clear in the finance committee that this was just a beginning. i believe, for example, that it's long overdue for medicare to have the bargain -- the power to bargain with drugmakers directly for lower drug prices. something like 90% of the american people, 90% of the american people believe that it is time to lift the restriction on medicare so that medicare could bargain to hold down the costs of medicine. weren't able to get that into the bill, but at a minimum, the bipartisan legislation the finance committee approved cannot be picked apart by pharma lobbyists, should not be picked apart by pharma lobbyists, particularly on the key question of whether or not we're going to stop pharmaceutical price gouging. on this side, my colleagues and i are going to continue to fight to get this legislation passed by the full senate. for now, it is up to leader mcconnell to bring our bill to the floor. my message to every member of this body is the americans were battling illnesses and struggling to pay for their medications cannot wait. these are people,

. >> you worked on a report issued today in the finance committee, which you're also on, about the nraand it's been getting a lot of headlines. saem essentially saying it was acting as a foreign interest if i'm not mistaken in 2016. what are you fiendsing in that investigation? >> well, the report turns up the unpleasant fact that the "r" in nra really stands for russian. the fact is that we looked at the runup to the 2016 election and it was very clear that russia was using russian nationals, maria butina, mr. tortion, as a way to get nra insiders in effect promising the lucrative kinds of business deals to grease their access into the united states. also, what we were able to expose is this trip in october of 2015 the nra lied about. they didn't say that it was an official trip. it was, and it was all about nra insiders trying to enrich themselves personally. and that's why the next step is i'm going to be looking at whether or not their tax exemption should stand given the fact this is mostly about self-dealing and personal enrichment. >> do you think the things exposed and also thi

for months the senate finance committee, the senate health and human services and the senate judiciary committee have been working on this issue. and the same is true in the house. there are multiple bipartisan ideas both houses of congress could act on. but speaker pelosi's bill is not the answer to high drug costs. the speaker's bill would force drug companies to either accept government price controls or face up to a 95% tax on the sale of their drugs. that's right, mr. president, 95%. this is not a good-faith effortdom to the table to talk -- ef -- good-faith effort to come to the table to talk about drug prices. right now america is a leader in the development of new treatments. the speaker's bill would threaten that. under his bill research into new treatments and cures would decrease. we need to address high drug prices but discouraging the innovation that lass improved -- that has improved the lives of so many americans is not the way to go about it. the speaker's proposal would do exactly what democrats larger socialist health care fantasy would do. and that is to hurt america
