we have a new perspective on donald trump's ineptitude, in fiona hill fiona hill's new book.onal television officer with expertise on russia and the administrations of presidential which w. bush and president barack obama. she continued her service in that position during the trump presidency, and eventually found herself testifying about and against the presidents in the first impeachment of donald trump. in her new book entitled there is nothing for you here, fiona hill writes that first i found president trump's fragility perplexing. given his highly privileged upbringing, he seemed to have had unbridled access to opportunity. i often question why he was so perpetually aggrieved when everything had so obviously been handed to him since birth. and i wondered how he could cope if someone dropped him alone on a random street in a faraway town like bishop auckland or on the keenan family farm in south dakota to fend for himself. i concluded, not well at. all trump needed to have everything done for him. at times he seemed hopeless when little things went wrong. we and luckily,

joining me now, fiona hill, former white house adviser on russia. she is the author of the new book "there is nothing for you here: finding opportunity in the 21st century" which comes out tomorrow. dr. hill, thank you for being here. thank you for writing this book. you've been studying russia and authoritarian regimes for decades. you're trained to recognize the signs of a nation spiraling toward authoritarianism in a way that the rest of us are not, which is why no one should take lightly when you write in this book, quote, russia is america's ghost of christmas futuren, a harbinger of things to come. for me, watching trump's disorganized but deadly serious attempt at a coup unfold, the clearest and most unmistakable parallels were with russia, unquote. so i ask you, what to your trained eye are some of those parallels? >> well, thank you, first of all, for having me on tonight. there are sadly many parallels. i think anybody who is even the most casual student of russia would see them right away. one of the most striking, in fact, is actually unf

fiona hill. thank you very much. you so much for corming on and sharing your thoughts with us this morning. >> all right, let's bring in david, we know you know so little about russia, the topic. david, one of the more important books on russia posts, resurrection, i am curious, you have been listening to the conversation of dr. hill, and before we move on and talk about the festival, i would love to get your thoughts dr. hill says on russia. >> i think one thing to note fiona hill, she saw things ideas. she saw things ideas. she took a gamble. she thought she would be more perspective. and i think she paid a price for the one hand but she's here witnessing us. telling us inside. the chaos of this administration, at the same time the warning that you give us about the authority temptation both within donald trump who may well be back. we'll be talking about this is a long time. the authoritarian temptations within ourselves. if we look at our calls, not everybody is is -- when i saw the interview given by steve banno

and fiona hill, she went bad on trump.ing that believes the big lie will ever listen to either of them. when you size up our situation, we all get the problem. do you see a path to correction or what a fix is here that's being ignored? >> well, i don't think very many republican leaders believe the big lie. the problem is they're willing to either remain silent or perpetuate the big lie. and i think the most straightforward way out of this mess is for mainstream republicans to stop lying, to start telling the truth to their supporters, and to be willing not to support donald trump when he runs for president again in 2024. if we build a broad coalition that includes all wings of the democratic party and republicans who believe in -- who still believe in democracy, then the authoritarian forces in this country can be isolated and defeated. >> how so? because here's what i don't understand about that. i read the op-ed from, who was it, christi todd whitman, and miles taylor who wrote the anonymous, you know, the thing about t
