in my time at the distribution, unfortunately i got to know a lot about the fire department. we have had 13 working fires, several which were very significant and displaced or injured our residents. i learned how hard the fire department works, how important their speedy response is in terms of saving lives and of course our possessions but also how they build relationships with their constituents at a time of intense loss, anxiety and fear and they do it with a great deal of compassion and dignity. i think that's the most important aspect of the work they do on behalf of our city. it's truly incredible to have a department to be able to get that type of feedback from our constituents. it's great to welcome our fire department to district 6. yes, it's a block away from my house. i forgot to leave the key to my apartment with my neighbor so i had to run and do that before i came here. they have been working to help facilitate with the fire department and the modern museum of art. it wasn't long ago when our city first started to develop plans to develop yerba buena -- that's go

i want to thank all of you and want to thank our men and women in uniform from our fire department andpartment who have sacrificed over the years and been part of our early response system. when the alarm woke me up this morning, i didn't know exactly what was going on and i think that is appropriate because when the earthquake happens there is a great deal of confusion. unlike 1906, we are much better prepared. with that being said, i still have nightmares that at some point in the future we know there is a 2 in 3 probability that the great one is going to hit us in a few years . i have a grandmother that is not prepared, i have many family members who are not prepared. thank you for san francisco who is ready for the big one. mayor lee is going to be here shortly and he's going to sign a piece of legislation that supervisor wiener and i worked on to make sure the three story soft story buildings that have people living and working in them get repaired. i want to thank many of you and our officials who worked with us to get that done and with that, let me turn it over to my tallest co

notice fire department, work in pairs with 2 extinguishers. one extinguisher and the other person is a backup to get you out. that's an nert volunteer. never fight a fire if it's a large fire. large is over your head. if you are scared and it's too big, it's too large for you. if it's spread beyond where it started and blocking our escape route and you are unsure how to use an extinguisher. there are 4 types of fire it's on the label. on the front. down here. water type extinguisher it's a chrome big thing that holds 2-1/2 gallons of water. 30-40 feet away is the maximum, you want to get closer. flood it with water you can put your thumb over the tip and it fans it out. dry chemicals, inside here this is a bc this is one you might have in your car. it's not used on wood, paper, classic fires only on flammable liquid and electrical fires that's what you use in your car. if will have a pressure gauge. metal handle and it will have a good sized rubber nozzle and the label and all that will tell you the fire it's for. pass, pull the pin out. aim th

all these other agencies are involved the fire department are involved they are involved in assembly occupancies with an occupant load of 50 or more. the building department looks at construction reasonable doubted things the fire department looks at fire and life safety regarding exiting and sprinklers. health department is involved and permitting and inspection. the entertainment commission, this is a new change within the last 5 years or so where any restaurant wants to have live entertainment or a dj or anything defined as entertainment by the city -- is it in the -- i don't remember the add min code, i believe for the entertainment commission. have you to get a special permit. and this is sometimes difficult to do because you might be in an area that's residential if you have a restaurant with live music you may find your plans are at odds with the neighborhood's desire for tranquillity. and in fact that's often the case in san francisco where we have conflicts with night time entertainment and the residents. public works, public works department regulates most restaurant permitt
