the fire department is a family. we live together, eat together, sleep in the same dorm together, go to crazy calls together, dangerous calls and we have to look out for one another. when i was burned in a fire years ago and i felt responsible, i felt awful. i didn't want to talk to any of my civilian friends. they couldn't understand what i was going through. the firefighters knew, they understood. they had been there. it is a different relationship. we have to rely on one another. in terms of me being the chief of the department, i am really trying to maintain an open relationship with all of our members in the field so myself and my deputy chiefs, one of the priorities i had was for each of us to go around to different fire stations to make sure we hit all within the first three or four months to start a conversation. that hasn't been there for a while. part of the reason that i am getting along well with the field now is because i was there. i worked there. people know me and because i know what we need. i know w

one is i wanted to thank the fire department public ly on a 3 or 4 occasions we had to call the fire department in the paramedics to come to assist my wife before she passed away. every time they came they were always professional. and very kind and courteous. and -- really cared about one time my wife did not want to go to the hospital and they insisted and at this time probably saved her life. so, thank you fire department. the other thing is i live near the chain of lakes. before the pandemic i wanted to have the slow down on chain of lakes and the fire department said about the speed bumps. i'm worried about the chain of lake on friday afternoon. how can engine thirty-four get across the park or -- engines in the sunset? friday afternoon after 3:30 it is backed up sometimes to fulton street. i wish the commission would ask rec and park to not close jfk at noon on friday and may be close it at 6 o'clock to reduce the traffic on the chain of lakes. and you know -- that's what it is for. to have engine companies and trucks so they can come kroosdz the park in case there is a need for

this is something that has been long in the making for the fire department. i see this as a really important step in the right direction. it's important for us to have the fire training facility, state of the art. and i think most of us here on the board of supervisors went through a small training on treasure island. so you have that facility and an older smaller facility in the mission and both of those have served the city well. i think the treasure island facility is appropriate, a training facility is appropriate, but because of future development, you all need to find a permanent home. i am a strong believer and have been a strong proponent on this board for the city purchasing property so that we're not spending the taxpayer dollars on rent whereas we then have the ability to own and for future opportunities, it lowers the cost and exposure to the taxpayer. i'm excited this is happening. i think it's overdue and it's something we want to fully support for your department. the question i have for you today -- and thank you for your leadership on moving t

that is very succinct from the san jose fire department. they've got a fire to fight right now.heck in with vianey arana and see what exactly the winds will be doing to the smoke that's heading up. hopefully it will keep heading up. >> yeah, you know, that's one thing that's been the biggest concern. the national weather service actually just tweeted a really interesting image. you can see the heat signature from remote sensing from the sector of that fire from space. go check it out on the national weather service site. hopefully we can pop the image up so you can see what i'm talking about. it uses remote sensing and it is detecting the heat from the san jose fire. as of now, the winds are expected to be breezy but they're going to get gusty into the evening. temperatures not too hot right now. we are heading into a cooling trend in the 60s and 70s. let's look at the current wind speeds right now because areas near the benecia bridge as well between 8 to 10 miles per hour, so they're a lot calm earp. always we mentioned earlier, down through san jose right now at about 15 to 1

what we notice in the police department, i want to thank the fire department for keeping track of the calls. we definitely want to support them. we want all the programs to succeed, because this should be other teams responding to these calls. not just the police department. so i just wanted to make sure that you understand that. that's our goal. and the chief's goals when it comes to people in mental health crisis. the only difference that i see, at least from the police department perspective is 2,336 calls from the year before to this year. so i'm here to support whatever program the city is implementing, but we want to be part of the conversation, because we've been in the game, we've been playing the game and we have the structure to deal with the situations. it's important that the police department has a voice in how this infrastructure that we're building now for a better future, especially for people that are afflicted by mental health in the city and county of san francisco, it's very important. there is 1 in 4 families affected by mental health. and a lot has been said abou
