or the ways that firefighters are selected. i ran a writing program and i do give up writing test when i hired people. i've learned not to drink people on the test that while it was important i had to make a cutoff to than look at other factors. that is for a writing program. so it sounds to me like a system was created that is the altered so there are a lot of people may be who should not be there. that would be the case in my program if i only hired from the top but should i feel safe? do you feel there are too many people who got in through the of cronyism system view should not be there? or do they step up? >> we will see. to make go long answer shorts. a wildfire battle in nevada county sent four firefighters to the hospital. is threatening some 2,000 homes just north of interstate 80. this morning there are mandatory evacuations in place. so far the fire has charred about 1,500 acres and we have learned of the four firefighters injured, three are expected to be treated and released in the next several hours. >> suffered some burn injuries that were transported to uc davis. right now the exact incident is still under investigation to determine what exactly happened, why the firefighters were on the line. >> this this morning 800 firefighters are on that front line with more on the way. the fire is 15% contained. firefighters are cautiously optimistic hoping the winds stay in tear favor today. >>> meantime, some help from mother nature, cooler weather this weekend helped fire crews battling a massive wild tire near lake berryessa. massive progress from last week. that nearly 7,000 acre wragg fire is 60% contained. firefighters expected it to be fully under control by tomorrow and all road closures and evacu

and firefighters are really working hard to contain this fire. but they only have 5% containment and that is along the ridge line between the towns and the wilderness that this is burning. this is incredibly dense wilderness. it is hilly, it is difficult to fight and within the last five or ten minutes, the wind has actually died down. we have seen this very erratic fire behavior and it's extreme fire behavior because it is so dry. the wind shift and firefighters are really at the mercy of mother nature and so are the residents here of clear lake. we spoke to a couple of people that have been out here watching the ridge line because they live so close. here's what they had to say. >> that's what it looked like kind of. it looked like a mushroom cloud that came from like a nuclear explosion, kind of. >> when we got here the flames had just got up to the peak and it had burned down and we had seen a couple spot fires and those escalated and got pretty big and took out the whole side of the mountain like ten minutes. >> so, as he said it all happene

there are 630 firefighters doing battle. they expect the number to top 1,000 before it is over. >> structures effected, i know for sure, two houses destroyed by the fire. we have damage assessment specialists in place. a number of outbuildings. >> reporter: anybody injured. >> no injuries. >> reporter: we stopped at one home where a team from the san francisco fire department was set up. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: 5% containment on the fire. the fire on the west side subsided a big and picked up where there are fewer homes. investigators are still searching for a cause. >> they have a long way to go. what can you tell us about additional resources? are firefighters from the wragg fire in the napa area coming to help? >> reporter: yeah. there have been firefighters come in from the wragg fire. the officials told me a lot of firefighters who are being excused from the fire saying i want to get up there but they are required to rest, mandatory 12 hour rest period before they can get up here. they have to make sure everybody

easy ways for firefighters to get in there. they will have to get the air drops in there while they have day light and get helicopters going. a lot of terrain. it is hot and dry and this is a big fire. if they pull back you will see, looks like there is two fires. one bigger than the other. he will pull back and you can see how high the flames are. the trees are 80 feet high easy and the flames are reaching that. again notice the smoke going straight up. again, not sure what is in the area in terms of ranches and homes but this is typically remote terrain, south lake, south end of lake -- clear lake. there is a better shot. you can see the smoke coming up. we will watch it. the upshot is it is not a howling wind driving the fire but it is hot and dry. when i come back we will talk about the heat today and follow up on the fire and we will talk about the cool down that is around the corner. >> we have more fires to talk about. road closures and the threat of evacuations in the sierra. the lowell fire is 45% contained. it blacken

one homeowner said he was ready when firefighters asked him to evacuate. >> my son actually woke up and came downstairs and woke my wife and i up. within a couple of seconds the firefighters came and knocked on the window and told us to get out. >> as you can see that fire was going pretty well this morning. it burned three acres, no word on the cause. but it has been contained. >>> meanwhile, an unexpected turn of events at a wildfire burning in napa and solano counties. the major flare-up forced more people to evacuate. it burned an additional 400 acres but the flames stayed within the secondary containment lines. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the staging area in vacaville where firefighters faced another hot day today. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. those hot temperatures have been a real challenge as has the rugged terrain. now that the sun is coming up, they are going to get a better look at exactly where this fire does now stand.this fire is now 80% contained. but it is roaring within those containment lines. the "wragg fire" has been burning for a week, 1

but it was a long, hot day for firefighters battling the flames. on the ground and in the air local state and federal firefighters battled the fire together. u.s. army specialists say it burned more than 250 acres. how it started is a mystery because there was no one in the air where the brush fire started. >> the training area where the fire started is just grass land so there were no soldiers training out there. >> reporter: black smoke could be seen for miles. just when they thought they had it under control.... >> the wind picked up and it took off on us again. >> reporter: two hours later firefighters were battling the flames again. the weather hot humidity and unpredictable winds. people who live in the neighborhoods watched the fire anxiously. >> there was a line right there and it started coming down the hill and it was down to the bottom in about less than ten minutes. >> reporter: they had engines on guard in case the fire spread. >> it could spot, embers fly and land somewhere else and take off. >> reporter: mother nature made conditions

a firefighter sent us this picture. he is with a team from marin county who have been working on the "wragg fire" since last night. more firefighters from the bay area are heading north to help fight the fire. sf fire sent a strike team around 6 a.m. they loaded up gear, held a strategy meeting and headed to the fire lines with 22 firefighters and five engines. that team was sent specifically to protect buildings like homes. in this photo from last night, it shows firefighters on the front lines, pretty amazing, that fireline clearly visible and the lights from the fire truck reflecting in the smoke. you can see the area is consumed by the smoke. keep sharing your photos of the "wragg fire" on social media. >>> mourning across the bay area today over the officer killed in the line of duty in hayward. kpix 5's anne makovec has more on how the community is showing support for sergeant scott lunger. it is now 15% contained. 1372 firefighters are work to put this out. cal fire did lift mandatory evacuation orders for the golden bear community last evening. the fire now burning away from those homes, thanks to calmer winds yesterday in a remote area. the terrain is so rugged, fire crews cannot bring heavy equipment in and have to make containment lines by hand. >> it's going to be ugly trying to get in there. >> reporter: one outbuilding burned down, another building damaged. mandatory evacuations in effect for quail ridge and canyon creek areas. the red cross has an evacuation center at the winters community center. >> we stayed until the flames were out the back window. they were 30 feet tall at that point. that's when i decided we need to go. >> reporter: there's also a large animal evacuation center located nearby. a lot of ranches up in the area, people with cows, horses, you name it. as for the cause of this fire, it's still under investigation. early signs point to it starting from a vehicle accident. live in vacaville, anne makevoc, kpix 5.

cal fire says 380 firefighters are working on it right now. julie watts reports. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the evacuation area for this fire is growing. currently hundreds of homes are threatened by these flames. you can see the road is closed behind us leading up to these areas. firefighters facing unpredictable winds, difficult terrain and because of the drought, it's also bone dry. now, billowing smoke and crackling flames created an orange and black backdrop for tankers fighting the massive fire yesterday. hundreds of firefighters continue to battle the rural fire. helicopters scooped up water each bucket holding 324 gallons. emergency responders fear the fire would move quickly, and it did, ballooning to thousands o acres in just a matter of hours. >> super dry vegetation, four years of drought. the winds keep changing direction. >> all of a sudden it's windy and we don't have very much contained and it's spreading so fast and you guys just need to leave. >> reporter: the threat forced horses and catting to flee. according to the c
