after a six-year absence, the fireworks show is back in business. nbc bay area is live from downtown. what does it take to pull this off? >> reporter: well, quite a bit. they've been setting up all day. in fact, they're putting the finishing touches on this fireworks set up right now. people are starting to file in, in the distance, trying to get a good spot for the first fireworks display since 2008. the company out of oakland has set up 800 fireworks for the 20-minute show. the event was canceled six years ago due to budget cuts. the rotary of san jose raised $200,000 to bring it back. the city and county donated half of that money. and the rotary club president is expecting clorowds to show them welcome back. >> to get people downtown, that's exciting. you don't do that in your back yard. i don't care how illegal you are. we hope people come downtown, forget the illegal fireworks. we've got things controlled here. and they're going to see something they haven't seen anywhere else. >> reporter: he told me in his 28-year career, this is the most fi

will this big fireworks show go on?t's really the question that so many are wondering as hurricane arthur hits. now, this was the site last night in boston, that was the third of july. the city chose to have the fireworks one day early out of fear it could be completely washed out. similar decisions are being made in communities in hurricane arthur's path. here in washington, authorities are putting on tonight's show, they say they take the threat of the weather seriously and they even have their own personal national weather service representatives on the ground to help them monitor the elements. >> they are partners from day one. they set the table and provide information leading up to the event and actually have people deployed into our command centers and our coordination centers on the day of to give us second by second tracking of potential storms. >> reporter: and 100,000 to 200,000 people are expected here tonight at the national mall, brian. authorities say the show will still go on. there's no call made yet. g
