[applause] you're a man of opinions. what i didn't know until reading a bit more about you was that your folks were both activists, that you grew up in a household of opinions. did that shape the way you look at the world? yup, 'cause my parents kind of, like, raised me to be independent and have independent thoughts, not so much as follow my peers, and to challenge information. so, i mean, to be an activist just means that they were conscious of certain facts that were circulating. and in the '60s, they were in their 20s, late 20s, so that was a time where you had a conscious movement where

[applause] i was struck by the number of times people have objected to your work. and yet, i've sat here with people whose careers have been marked by censorship and challenges. i'm not sure i've ever met anyone whose very first work at age 12 was censored by his adoptive mother. what was that about? well, you see, i started writing poetry when i was about eight, and she didn't read poetry. but when she found out that i'd written a three-act sex farce... [laughter] at the age of 12, or to be fair about it, probably 12 1/2, though still i didn't know very much about farce and practically nothing about sex at that time-- or at least, my knowledge o

not the host senior fellow at the center for international policy and the director of the afghanistan study group. in the land of the free home of the first amendment the united states of america is supposed to be of beacon for the rest of the globe that at least has been the rhetoric of our politicians for much of the past century now you may have a hard time shopping for a hallmark card in honor of today but may third today marks world press freedom day and to celebrate it a sobering statistic according to the latest global rankings of pressed freedom released by the freedom house organization the united states came in at twenty second ranking behind the likes of palauan dora st lucia even the marshall islands now granted it could be worse but since one that it could be worse becomes something for the united states to strive for now as our g.'s christine for as our reports freedom of the press isn't guaranteed when it comes to the united states. so mike you know rock out loud it's crazy as a pillar of american democracy the cornerstone of a free society. freedom of the press united states has the. freest. environment for the press in the world ce

that is a violation of arguably your first amendment rights because it chills dissent and chills freedom of religion. so when they give money to those fusion centers, then title 6 is triggered of the civil rights act of 1964. title 6 essentially requires that any federal funding be given in a way that -- to recipients who cannot engage in discriminatory behavior. if fusion centers cannot engage in activities that will violate for example civil rights. if the fusion centers are doing that, then d.h.s. has an obligation and it would be to the office for civil rights to tell them, look, you can't do this. if you are, we aren't going to give you funding because we are prohibited from doing so under title 6 of the civil rights act of 164. my view is protecting civil rights of everyone in this country, human beings, helps america preserve its values and it keeps our country the way it should be and not allow, for example, post-9/11 backlash or contentious issues about immigration to erode who we are and make this a very different country, which just harms everybody here. host: we are just moments away from the senate energy and natural resources committ
