grusheski: philadelphia was the first american city to develop a water system and to take on as a municipal responsibility water delivery to all of its citizens. when william penn laid out the city, he actually chose a spot of land that had a lot of groundwater. however, by 1730, 30,000 people lived within the first seven blocks of philadelphia, next to the delaware river. well, 30,000 people caused filth in the city and polluted their water sources. the groundwater was not potable. and in one year, 1/6 of the population died of yellow fever. now, they didn't know at the time that yellow fever was carried by mosquitoes. but the health issue was major in that first movement to build a water system. narrator: so they set out to find the cleanest source of water. although the majority of philadelphia's water now comes from the delaware river, early engineers found that development along the waterfront was causing pollution. so their search led them to the nearby schuylkill river. philadelphia developed technologies to pump water from the river into the city. these technologies established engi

republic of china and to be, of course, celebrating with our citizens here to be the first asian american mayor in the city. this all comes together the same year. we were talking about is so many times the past few weeks as we were getting excited about this visit, to really have the athletes that were here and perhaps some of the athletes and representatives that were here 40 years ago. or looking at each other, wondering what history would be, what relations they would be. two of the most important countries of the world and finding out what we can do to open a relationship and a dialogue, and it took this for of being wrong. today, we were thinking it could be anything -- baseball, track and field, golf, for that matter. if you have heard about golf in china, you know that is going extremely fast. 40 years ago, it took a couple of players. eventually allowing the president of people between them to open up a dialogue in this relationship. that is historic. that is what caused me to not only steady china, to study my own roots, my family, but to make a commitment as i can do my best here as one in in ad

americans. that is why when i came into office, i said one of the first things i want to do is introduce the said francisco city hall times, and we have done so since then. i notice that it is growing and growing in importance. next week is the death and assassination of dr. martin luther king. the principles that the practice, the compassion, the vision, the perseverance, are all those same kind of values and principles that i know are being practiced within the iranian american community today as well. whether you want to see a green iran or whether you want to help participate in the civic process in california or in your own city, this is what is very heartwarming, by us coming together on a night like this. i very much appreciate all the dedication that has been applied in making these nowruz events as special as they are. i also would like to say that we would like to have -- we like to have fun. it is really the best part of introducing what nowruz means. that is why over the last six years, we have had art shows in my office. we would have exhibits down here, supported by the mayor, and introduce it to
