grusheski: philadelphia was the first american city to develop a water system and to take on as a municipal responsibility water delivery to all of its citizens. when william penn laid out the city, he actually chose a spot of land that had a lot of groundwater. however, by 1730, 30,000 people lived within the first seven blocks of philadelphia, next to the delaware river. well, 30,000 people caused filth in the city and polluted their water sources. the groundwater was not potable. and in one year, 1/6 of the population died of yellow fever. now, they didn't know at the time that yellow fever was carried by mosquitoes. but the health issue was major in that first movement to build a water system. narrator: so they set out to find the cleanest source of water. although the majority of philadelphia's water now comes from the delaware river, early engineers found that development along the waterfront was causing pollution. so their search led them to the nearby schuylkill river. philadelphia developed technologies to pump water from the river into the city. these technologies established engi

first-generation american. on paper, most would write me off as a liberal democrat. young, female, have hispanic, new york cityi was fortunate to have parents who raised me to be aware of how government can impact its citizens. in 1962, with literally $50 in his pocket my father left his homeland of grace in pursuit of the american dream. my mother was forced to flee cuba at the age of 15 to escape the oppression of the newly formed regime, fidel castro. the one thing these two individuals from complete opposite sides of the world had in common was their belief that america was the one place in a world where they can be given the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. attending the american dream was not easy for my parents. young ages. they both came to new york alone, without money. or an education. leaving their families behind. working multiple jobs, learning the english language, making lots of sacrifices, my parents started a successful small business and economist their dreams. for the i visited cuba first time and that my relatives. imagine living in a country where the very government in peds its people

the van in the first place was because many of the employers employees who were african american had to take kids home on bay view and had some problems with bus routes. like this is a city where we have ways where we can of course make public transportation munis safer so our kids can get around the city. also i do know again the challenges of the bay view communities and hills and parts of places where there are programs that be a little bit more challenging and i'm excited about this. i just wanted to mention 2 things which i'm sure you are going to be looking at or whatever the company is going to be looking at. i do know that i know you mentioned drug testing but the fingerprinting process around the drivers is done so there aren't any folks driving kids around who have violent offenses or offenses against children and the other problem we ran into is double parking. we had a monitor so we wouldn't allow parent or van drivers who drop kids off to do that because of public safety issues. i'm sure there is going to be classes for people driving kids around and a maintenance area to help and keep kids in the van and maintaining the van which doesn't breakdown in the mi
