kristin fisher has an emotional and important story. i can't wait to hear about this. >> it is a good one. our hero this morning is a woman from chicago and she's been a hero over 40 years without ever leaving her home. barbara has been writing letters to troops in war zones from world war ii all the way to iraq and afghanistan. digital correspondent frank nappy has the story. >> reporter: barbara's patriotism is always on display outside of her small apartment. inside, several days a week, she proves that loving america is much more than just flags. she writes letters to local soldiers in combat zones. she fills them in on what's going on back home. >> who are you writing to? >> to keith crow. >> and he's from? >> oakland, illinois. >> reporter: and where is he now. >> he's in afghanistan. >> fighting yet another war. >> yes. >> afghanistan, this is barbara's sixth war for writing letters to the troops overseas. she has no idea how many she has written, but does remember when it started 1944. >> i started to write to my uncle who was i

kristin fisher has a video and a sharp reaction to it. kristin? >> that's right.s happened on monday but it started to become a big story on the web about 24 hours ago when sites like the drudge report started to post links to video of the incident which was captured on the bus ' video camera. about to show it to you but i want to warn you it is disturbing and graphic. if you don't want to see it or you don't want your kids to see it, this is your warning, okay. let's look at it. here's the video. you can see a student from bellville west high school turns around in his seat and starts to punch another student repeatedly in the face and another assailant joins in and other students stand and watch. some say they actually cheered. police are trying to figure out if this was a dispute over a seat or if it was racially motivated. the two religioned attackers are both black teenagers both ages 14 and 15. the victim is a white 17 year. the story is a headline on the drudge report. you can see it here, white student beaten on school bus. crowd cheers and one of the top

we'll send it over to kristin fisher. >>> good morning, everyone.eave it to washington to conduct a full-fledged congressional report on what else, twitter. that's right. which party tweets the most? what are they tweeting about? and who's the most influential tweeterring politician. the title is the social networking and constituent communication member use of twitter during a two-week period in 111th congress. a report on a social networking site that limits responses to 140 characters i would say that is a very long title. what this report did is analyzed tweets of members of congress after two week long periods in july and august. here's what they found. don't let the social skills of the obama white house fool you. 101 republicans use twitter compared to 57 democrats. you can see in this graph right here, this is senate and this is house republicans and these smaller slivers here for house and senate democrats. so republicans dominating twitter. this report found that during that two-week period, congressional republicansed 932 tweets compared

. >>> and kristin fisher is here with a hero central segment. >> that's right.t is time for the next hero central segment and this morning we are honoring a washington man that devoted his life to helping people with disabilities. this is such a great story. check this out. his name is ed and he is a president, ceo and founder of the national rehabilitation hospital here in washington. now, ed, himself is disabled. he suffered a severe spinal cord injury after a major car crash in college. and there he is playing golf right there. so in 1986 he founded the national rehab hospital and built it in to one of the top rehab hospitals in the nation. now, ed loves golf. so the research engineers at the hospital were able to build him special clubs so he could play the game he loves despite his spinal cord injury. over the years his hospital has helped thousands of disabled men, women and children learn to cope with their disability and play sports with their disabilities. remember the hero central report we did about the super h race? that is his hospital and parent of

george fisher. the oncologist who treated swayze in his last days at the stanford hospital and clinic. why is pancreatic cancer such a death blow? >> it's a difficult disease in part because it's always diagnosed so late. it's a disease where when symptoms develop, often times it cannot be removed. larry, if you forgive me -- >> larry: someone said today -- go ahead. >> i wanted to correct the first statement. we treated him at stanford on the context of a clinical trial. he was looking for new treatments. we were lucky enough to offer him that seemed to work for a while. the rest was given by oncologists in los angeles and they did a wonderful job taking care of him. >> larry: i'm glad we straightened that out. the treatment you tried work forward a while, right? >> yes, it did. it was a clinical trial in which he received standard treatment and an experimental drug that has been in the press. he was able to finish the beast series while he was receiving that therapy. it was quite an accomplishment

kristin fisher, over to you. >> good morning. it has been the year of the bailout. the u.s.ernment has already bailed out wall street, aig, car companies and now congress is considering bailing out newspapers, as well. here's a story on the hills blog the briefing room. obama opened a newspaper bailout bill. in an interview with editors of the pittsburgh post gazette the president said he is happy to look at bills before congress that will give struggling news organizations tax breaks if they restructure as nonprofit businesses. part of the reasoning for saying he is open to the bailouts can be explained in the huffington post headline. here it is right now. he says is becoming all blogosphere and all opinions and no news. he took aims at blogs on face the nation help says this the 24 hour news cycle is feeding anger especially when it comes to the health care debate. >> i think part of what is different today is the 24-hour news cycle and cable television and blogs and all of this, they focus on the most extreme elements on both sides. they can't get enough of conflict. it
