joining me now is the chairman and ceo of the fisher house foundation, ken fisher. mr. fisher, thank you very much. thank you for so many reasons. i was talking to one of the family members, shannon collins, last night, the mother of jeremiah collins. to the fact you have stepped up for these families, for those who don't have the resources is so extraordinary. tell me how you reacted to this and why you came forward. >> well, it was really seeing -- somebody had sent me a link to the story you did. that's what made me aware of this situation. and this was one of those decisions, andrea, that i wish i had every day, which is the no-brainer kind i had mobilized my board almost immediately, and some time shortly thereafter i received a phone call from senator mansion from west virginia asking if fisher house would step up and actually fill this gap. fisher house has always been about family, so you know, it was something that i just felt compelled to do. >> you know, chuck todd just interpreted what harry reid was saying today as the fact that this would get fixed, and no

are foundation, ken fisher.l me how this was all worked out. did you hear from chuck hagel, his office, if you volunteered the money -- they couldn't solicit it, but if you volunteered the money it would be legally about acceptable to get this money to the families? >> yes, i've heard from secretary hagel. and other at -- other people, you know, in the government. about this. you know, it all started again with you. and you know, we were contacted again by senator manchin about whether or not we'd be willing to do this. this is such an incredible a terrible situation. that this was just, you know, as i said, this has been an easy decision for us to make. we're still working out the details, and as it stands right now, i've got six checks sitting on my desk. i'm just waiting for the addresses as to where to send them. and they will be overnighted. and these families will have these checks tomorrow. >> now, i know these checks will be for presumably the $100,000 of the death benefit. the pentagon did come up with

is -- it was man well of fisher's idea. she works at the lodge. when the season starts in late june, the effects of climate change are visible here. >> years ago, there was still snow everywhere on the ground at this time. it was usually snowing when we came up here. but over the years, we have seen the snow melting away earlier. each year, there is less snow when we come up are. >> fisher wants to make the great hall visible within our project that points out climate change. filmmakers are documenting the project to show the changes in the alpine landscape. six weeks earlier, they filmed the beginning of the project. this was early july. it had snow. the lodge keeper and her friends covered 1500 square meters of snow with a special fleece. it reflects the sun, protecting the glacier below it. warmth does the rest. six weeks later, the glacier around the fleece has melted away. now the fleece covers a kind of glacier table. one geologist says the work shows that glaciers are melting too much in the summer and not growing back enough in the winter.
