the edmund fitzgerald is probably the most famous shipwreck on the great lakes.he was an iron or freighter, 729 feet long. she was built in 1958. she was the queen of the lakes. meaning she was the largest ship sailing on the great lakes. she sank in a terrible storm in november of 1975, all 29 men on board went down with her and it was a massive tragedy across the great lakes shipping community . from that -- we're still not 100% sure what happened that night. part of the investigation included anything on the surface including inflatable liferaft. they would have been attached to vessels and when they had a certain water pressure, they automatically inflated and came to the surface. unfortunately, no men were able to find them and climb into them. we have one of them here on display. 29 men on the night the fitzgerald died, they all went down. about half of those guys were actually from ohio. the captain was from ottawa hills, right here in toledo. it was a very big deal across the great lakes, especially ohio and even more so here in toledo. shipwrecks in the

i want to start with the first, kerry fitzgerald, your maternal grandmother. how did she figured into the resistance? >> well, i begin with a string of my grandmother because it captures i think some of the themes you just noted that it wanted to explore in the book, that my grandmother as i describe in the book in 1944, early 1944 basically had a rosa parks moment where, this is in virginia, she gets on a bus going from lynchburg, virginia, to danville, her home. she took a seat in the so-called white section of the bus and as it turns out for number of reasons i discussed in the book, she's not arrested like rosa parks for some of the other people. but i think her experience was exemplary that moment in history. one, the circumstances, social context was such that she felt her grievances that had built up over time, that she could challenge the segregated seating, which was lost in virginia at the time. and also although this is something that i think undoubtedly other unsung, and recorded incidents of this sort, it did not lead to a movement at that point,
