. >> reporter: theo fleury was a national hockey league star who says it happened to him. >> from theime i was 14 to the time i was 17 years old, i was molested, probably about 150 times by my coach. >> reporter: fleury was a junior hockey player in canada, with his sights set on the nhl, when his coach sexually abused him. >> 400 miles away from home, you know? he was -- this guy was everything to me. he was my dad, my mom, paying for everything for me. he basically, at that point, had convinced me that the only way that i was going to make it to the nhl was through him and being with him. >> reporter: and like many other abuse victims, he kept what happened to himself. >> you just don't have the faculty to be able to deal with it. plus, who am i going to talk to? i have nobody to talk to. if i blow the whistle on this guy, will i be branded this troublemaker or this guy that blew the whistle or, you know, am i gay. >> reporter: after years of drug and alcohol abuse, fleury has now found teaming in trying to help prevent other children from being abused. >> know the coach driving you

. >> theo fleury played for 15 seasons. he alleged he was sexually abused by his former coach, graham james. he joins us now. knowing what we know now in the penn state case with jerry sandusky, why does it take so long for this cases to become public? >> well, you know, if we take a look at the catholic church and what's happened with the catholic church, you know, they have been covering up abuse for centuries, and you know, it is -- you know, you look at penn state. it's all about cover-ups and this guy knew this and this guy knew that. and you know, the most powerful people are funding penn state were involved as well. it's just one big cover-up after another. >> how can an alleged predator like jerry sandusky exist for such a long time without getting caught? >> it's -- you know, most pedophiles are extremely smart. they are very good at what they do. and they put themselves in a position of power and trust. and you know, then they take not only -- not only do they take the young boy and gain trust with him, but he bas

joining us now is david clohessy and theo fleury. good morning to you both.start with you in toronto this morning. even though jerry sandusky wasn't abusing players on the penn state team, you were abused by your trusted hockey coach for a number of years, how were you able to deal with that? >> well, not very well. you know, i went down a path of, you know, a lot of self-destruction, a lot of, you know, alcoholic, drug addict, you know, had a lot of relationship problems, relationship issues, so you know, it was a difficult time in my life. but i'm really happy where i'm at today. >> how long did it take for you to get the help that you needed. >> probably about 27 years. >> what finally led you to, i guess, seek help? >> well, i was just really sick and tired and fed up, you know, i was caring around a secret for a long, long time, and you know, i wasn't functioning as a human being at that point in my life. and you know, i had a great c conversation with god. on a particular night. and that was about six years ago. and from that day forward, my life has be

. >> michelle fleury, bbc news. you mentioned obviously that europe and what's happening there has an impact here on the u.s. economy. to what degree can the fed do little more than react to events abroad? >> well, it is a bit frustrating. obviously, the key decisionmakers in europe are the european leaders and -- and economic policymakers there and ultimately it's their responsibility to find solutions to this very difficult problem. of course, i and treasury secretary, and other economic policymakers in united states do confer and meet with european policymakers on a regular basis and we give our advice for what it's worth, sometime they take it, sometimes they don't. but obviously they're the ones who have to make those decisions. so what we can do really is to -- only a couple of things, so one is that we can look at our own financial institutions and try to assess the exposures and the linkages between our institutions and those in europe and the sovereign debt in europe and we've been doing that on consistent
