the flint, water story is one of those. remind us, how did it all begin? >> well in some ways it began just a few years ago. in others ways it began decades ago. the short story is that the city of flint, michigan, it had been getting its water from the great lakes through detroit for more than 50 years. in april of 2014 it switched its water source. the new swatter source was not treated properly, and that resulted in a number of water problems including the corrosion of the infrastructure, the pipes that the water passed through that were typically made of lead. this led to the entire city being exposed to lead through its water source, there was also a two-year outbreak of legionnaire's disease, which killed people. a type of pneumonia, it went on despite the fact the community was registering their countries with the water from the very beginning. they were dismissed and belittled for more than a year and a half before there was any response. >> why did april 2014 happen, why the switch? >> well the city at that time did not have the control of its loc

i know in michigan we've got the flint water crisis. people in flint still do not have clean water. in detroit, we have water shutoffs for residents. that issue, for example, has, you know, people like to exceptionalize it and be like it's really tied to this one area. but the more we kind of look at it, the more environmental issues are all across the country with issues of access to something as fundmental as water. so similar themes, i love that people are experts on the localities. do you see similar trends in themes. i do think that each region, each location whether it is as small as a neighborhood or as big as a city or a metro detroit area should focus on what is our culture? right? what is the culture, those of us here year round, what is our culture for organizing? how are we creating communities of care around one another? we do have more similarities than differences. at the same time, some of the things i hear from especially red states like in nashville, south dakota, for example, that's kind of launched in some of the places as testing grounds. i have noticed kind of
