florence looi, al jazeera, langon. >> joining us, lynn very good to have you with us. first do you suspect that the election will be mostly fair and free? >> well, i think the international community is very aware of the significant challenges that myanmar faces. and that is looking out less for a perfect election, as opposed to one that is reasonably free and fair. i think your earlier reports hinted at the remaining issues, in myanmar. it faced a significant structural rob such as constitutional reservations for 25% military block in parliament. and as you also just heard, there have -- the muslim community in myanmar have largely been disenfranchised. so many have been prevented from running for parliament as well as voting in the upcoming election. but of course this is going to be posing a problem, moving forward because if one community is disenfranchised from political and legal process you, you know there might be problems moving ahead. >> to your point -- >> by and large these fail to be free and fair. >> even if they win will they have full control? because t

florence looi al jazeera yangon. >> joining us vie skype is dr. lynn kwok, brookings institution think tank. madam thank you so much for joining us here on al jazeera. so what we do know, it does seem that aung san suu kyi's party the nld has managed to gain the 60% of seats for a majority in parliament. so now we're looking ahead to months of political wrangling. how difficult do you think it will be between now and march when a president will be announced? >> well, obviously, there are lots of issues to be sorted out and how easy they're going to be sorted out will depend of course on her margin in parliament. you mentioned 67% as the magic number for her to be able to successfully push for her candidate as president to become president. however, there are other issues such as who, you know, the new president will appoint in the administration in key positions. and this isn't very clear, considering especially because the nld doesn't have very many second tier leaders, they have aung san suu kyi and aung san suu kyi alone. that is enough to lead

al jazeera's florence looi is in yangon. >> i'm here with two first time voters, christina and lee, to talk about sunday's poll. how important is this upcoming election to you? >> well, it's very important for me and for country. the right to vote is very -- the most important thing for the democrat initiative if we are truly practicing and also, we can change our -- we can pick -- we can choose our government. >> reporter: now this election has centered on the topic of change. what sort of changes are you hoping to see? >> how to see more participation from the opposition party in the parliament and also the power balance between that parliament. so i want to see both sides from the opposition party. >> myanmar transitioned to democracy nearly five years ago. are you happy with the changes so far? >> i'm happy with the change because democracy stay new to the country, at least the government try the change, like even though not 100% at least they are trying the change the legislative system. >> i want them to take more responsibility for rule of law, and also, i don't feel safe around

florence looi, al jazeera, yangon. >> wahei joins us outside of the house of the leader of the mld. bring us up to date with what results we know so far. >> reporter: yes, darren. page slow process, those results coming out from the union election commission every few hours or so. there is a live broadcast. a very brief update from them with the official results coming out. most of the results so far have been for the regional seats for the regional parliament. but we have had the results announced for 28 seats in the lower house of parliament so far. the national league for democracy, the party of an su an sun su chi has won 26 of the 28 seats in the loir house. a slow process, too slow for her and her party and supporters. they want to see these results come out quicker so they can get the formal celebrations underway because it looks like they are heading for a very large win. >> yeah. what's the mood there amongest supporters of the nld? wayne? >> certainly over the last few days, we have seen quite a few people at the fronts of the head quarters of the national league for democ

florence looi is there with the latest. >> reporter: this is where reporters are going to be converginge next few days the election commission says it will gill rolling updates as results come in several time throughout the day. the announcements will be made in the capital but carried live here. myanmar's biggest city and commercial hub. the newspapers have made headlines just a day after an election predicting the within for the national league for democracy. the party leader her civil hinted at a victory. she told supporters earlier this morning that the results are not in but i think we know who has won even if it's not been announced. now there have been official complaints lodgee lodgeed with x commission not just by the national league for democracy but also an ethnic mind or at this party. complaints about out voting process and counting and reporting process have not followed procedures and rules. >> let's go scott heidler live for us. even when the vote is completely counted, it's going to be sometime before myanmar knows who its next government or president is going to be. >>

florence looi has more now from myanmar. >> this parliament session is attended by members of parlorpal not in the most recent poll but in the 2010 general election. many of them would have lost their seat in the most recent elections, but they are still able to debate issues like the budget and pass laws because their terms only expire in january, 2016, and it won't be another two months after that that a new government will be formed because the current government's term only expired at the end of march. the president, however, has promise add smooth and peacefully power transfer. the military said the national league for democracy also wanted a general election -- won by a landslide about but were not allowed to govern. many leaders were imprisoned. ang son su chi led to victory in 1990 and said she wants to meet the president, the nilt chief and the speaker of parliament to discuss the transition of power. she met the speaker on sunday. she will meet him again on thursday. no date has yet been set for a meeting with the president and the military chief and it is these discussions th

let's tick you live now florence looi is there. alleged irregular lier tayes in to the lead up to sunday's poll. just how free and fair has this campaign been? >> reporter: if we talk about the election campaign, well, every party has been allowed to campaign freely. allowed to hold rallies and speeches throughout the country. but the -- but the main opposition party, the national league for democracy says there have been cases of violence, of -- against their campaign workers as well as against their candidates. and that is their chief concern. now, if you talk about the election process being free and fair, she has said it's already proving to be less than that. and the main complaint is the fact that they are irregularities in the votter list, they estimate it could be anywhere between 30 and 80% and the election commission doesn't seem to have taken much initiative in correcting these complaints when they have been launched with it. the third issue is whether or not the entire election can be considered free and fair when 25% o
