jessica flores reports from san leandro. >> reporter: good morning. at the san leandro bart station just a couple of blocks from here the city of san leandro approved a $33 million project to bring affordable housing near the transit center. that's kind of what the state lawmakers want to do. they want to make it more profitable for developing to go into communities and build these complexes near these transit center. the bill making its way through sacramento now is from san diego. san diego is sponsoring the legislation. assemblyman todd gloria authored the bill and under the plan, developers would be rewarded for building affordable units near public transit. so here's how bill 2372 would work. the plan tries to maximize density essentially favoring developers who build with more usable space and change impact fees so it would be by square footage, which is supposed to encourage developers to build more compact units. the plan would reduce the requirements for actually needing parking spaces near the units. the bill would follow others intended to
