florida i call this the tale of two florida's florida was separated into two colonies during the american revolution you have east florida and you have west florida and both were under british control and they remained mostly loyal to britain. so these aren't considered one of or part of that kind of colony of rebellion, because these two it's colonies or united states states until much later well and i'll touch on that here in just a minute. but the british had gotten both east and west florida from spain at the conclusion of the french and indian war. but at the end of the american revolution britain's actually going to give those back to spain. but again, we'll talk about that in a second. so east florida's capital was saint augustine and west florida's capital was pensacola. there's a couple of key battles that do take place in florida. i mentioned those before there's the battle of thomas creek may 17 1777 this took place in what is now the county of nasa just south of the city of callahan. and this was a mix of troops from the continental army and georgia militias and they were on a

tropical storm elsa slammed cuba and now it's taking aim at south florida. the outer bands of rain and wind already making an impact and that's making it tough on rescue crews in surfside as they look for survivors in the rubble of the collapsed condominium. 28 people confirmed dead, 117 missing. i want to bring in sam brock, meteorologist bill karins and morgan chesky in surfside, florida. sam, what's the latest where you are? >> reporter: chris, good morning. overnight and certainly into the early morning hours here in key west, we are seeing storm conditions pick up as elsa's bands are lashing key west. the most noticeable change is wind speeds which are 35 to 40 miles per hour. we had a wind gust overnight that hit 62 miles an hour. the florida straits here, the water is choppy and kicking up, breaching the sea wall. the businesses, where i'm standing right now, at an institution in key west, luis back yard. it was closed yesterday, again today, all flights around key west have been cancelled through 2:00 this afternoon, which is problematic for the july

we see the florida landfall and the florida story and we're probably going to have more outages on friday than we did for landfall. >> we're looking at a nasty friday here in the east. let's go back into that news conference there. >> good morning. now we're on the morning of day 14. search and rescue has continued their operation. the teams continue to make progress in the areas that were inaccessible prior to the demolition and i'm glad to report that despite the difficult conditions the teams experienced no injuries to the first responders that were in this last operational period. through these efforts and since our last briefing, the teams recovered an additional ten victims bringing the number of deaths to 36. 32 have been identified and the next of kin notifications have been made. at this time, 200 people are now accounted for and 94 people are still unaccounted for. the detectives are working continuously to follow up on all of the leads to determine if all of the potentially missing persons were actually in the building during the collapse. as the magnitude of this continues to

again, the biggest impacts will be along the southwest coast of florida but still southern florida is under the gun for wind, for rain, for isolated tornadoes. i really do like that you mentioned hot and humid because that's a big impact when you're outdoors, you're underneath that sun, and that's what we have ahead of this storm. expect heavy rain for cuba, winds in florida, mainly after sunrise tomorrow through wednesday. by wednesday we'll see it strengthen further into the gulf. we're not expecting it to get to hurricane status but still strong at 60, 65 miles an hour, maybe even up to 71 once it gets over the gulf waters. and then we expect the landfall later tuesday into wednesday. again, we really won't know until it goes over cuba later on tonight. now this is a big thing we're watching. i think the winds will be the biggest threat here. again, it looks like the strongest winds, the tropical storm winds will be west, tampa, naples, marco island. again, all of southern florida is under the gun for these winds where we could see isolated winds gusting up to 30, 35, 40 miles per
