it's hard to believe some cities in florida may actually wake up to colder temperatures than cities as as new york city. here we have our temperature map for the morning hours. you can see the blue, that is 20s into central florida. including into orlando. new york city also into the 20s. their low right around the lower 20s to start off the day. jacksonville, they're sitting into the teens. morning low temperatures as cold as 18 degrees. we can see those teens all the way into atlanta, even into columbia. even as we progress throughout the day, temperatures are going to stay generally about 20 degrees below normal. it has been all this cold air across the east which has been kicking off heavy lake-effect snow. northern indiana into ohio back into upstate new york where some of the heavier snow bands, we could see 2 feet of snow as we go throughout the day. that's going to create travel problems along i-80 and i-90 as we go throughout your day. into the northwest, more heavy rain seattle toward portland. on top of the rain they've already seen. additional flooding problems are expected

this happened in panama city, florida. >> i don't want anybody to get hurt. >> reporter: the superintendentols pleads with a man who pulls out a gun at his school board meeting but the man identified by police as clay duke refuses to back down. >> please don't. please don't. please. >> reporter: he doesn't hit anyone. but he keeps shooting exchanging fire with the district security chief before turning the gun on himself. >> on the ground. on the ground. >> reporter: by the time s.w.a.t. team officers entered the room the gunman was lying on the floor. no one else was hurt. a television reporter inside the room covering the meeting ran to safety. but kept her camera rolling. she described what happened before the shooting. >> i saw him come out, spray paint a big circle with a line or v through it. it wasn't nice. then he said i have a motion for you and pulled out his gun and when he pulled out his gun that's when i hit the floor. i ducked. >> reporter: after the reporter left the room school board member ginger littleton attacked the gunman with her purse. littleton says duke had a clear

and ginger is joining me on the phone from panama city, florida.inger, before i get to the why, i want to first just ask you how are you today? was today's sunrise a bit brighter, i imagine. >> i have to say it certainly was, brooke. it took on new meaning. every second of today has been very special. >> piece together for me. he let the children go and he wanted to keep some of the hostages. you grab your purse and you smack him. why did you do that, and what was going through your head at the time? >> i don't know -- i didn't even know what was going through my head, brooke. i just knew that if i left, these guys were completely unprotected. our cavalry had not arrived yet. there was no one in the boardroom that could do anything for them. this guy held all the power and when i turned back around and saw he was standing now up on the desk at the same level, standing where i had been sitting and my guys were lined up like pigeons on a wire, one after another, it would have taken two seconds for him to take every one of them out. they had three-rin

video that's gone viral and you can only imagine the terror members of that school board in panama city, florida, were feeling when a gunman threatened them, aimed at them, and then opened fire. tonight, we know more about that gunman and what drove him to do this. 56-year-old clay duke, an ex-con was apparently under economic pressure and angry that his wife, a teacher, had been fired. mark strassmann is in panama city tonight. mark, the idea of pulling a weapon on the school board didn't just come to duke yesterday. >> reporter: no, it didn't, katie. in fact police now know clay duke had planned the attack at the school board building for some time. in his trailer they found yesterday's date circled on a calendar. now a word of caution-- some of the following video may be disturbing. >> the school board policy 7.... >> reporter: from the moment clay duke spray painted a "v" on the wall, people in the room sensed something ugly was about to happen. then the ex-con startled a routine meeting of the bay district school board again with a pistol. everybody in this room hit the road. >> it was a .9

a gunman taking school board members in panama city florida, hostage.watching on the screen, firing on them at point-blank range. incredibly no one was hurt except the gunman. mostly thanks to mike jones. the director of security, for the school board. and he fired the shot that brought the gunman to the floor. the shooter then took his own life. jones was not hit by any bullets but he was hospitalized with some chest pains. he is just out of the hospital now and spoke to the media a short moment ago. >> anytime you do these things, locate, isolate and neutralize the threat in rapid response. i just didn't have a shot to take the shot because all the board members were sitting straight up. i just didn't, had the time to snatch the door open to get a clean shot. i was waiting. when he shot, i thought he shot the superintendent i had to engage no matter what. i could hear the sirens coming. that is what i was waiting on the backup and fellow officers coming and once he shot the superintendent, the gunfight was on. i didn't have a chance. jenna: a lot to b
