if romney wins florida, he doesn't need ohio, new hampshire or iowa to reach 270 to win. it's much simpler, winning florida means winning the election. florida is like four states in one. central florida with four key swing counties along i-4 will probably be the decider this year. palm beach counties expected to go obama and miami-dade with strong cuban-american influence traditionally has gone red. balancing that out what's called the president's latino fire wall with almost 1 in 4 being latino and a recent poll shows they're more enthusiast nick that election and that's 61% of latinos compared to 71 nationally according to latino decisions, but including all groups here, romney is slightly ahead and the real clear average he's ahead by two percentage points and the first debate in the beginning of october and as tim russert told us, down to the wire, it's florida, florida, florida. >> and obviously, the ground game is so important that partly because of that big latino population, big push for voter registration. where does it stand? >> up to july, the year up to july,

270 electoral votes without ohio, but he would have to win, florida, virginia, north carolina, iowa, colorado, nevada and either new hampshire orther words, michael, he would have to win about every other battleground state. i threw in the michael, because it's not this the quote. we learn that 18% of ohioan have already voted. 63% of whom -- basically two to one have voeed for the president. does mitt romney still have time to win the buckeye state? >> yeah, i think he does. you still have votes being cast early there. you also have election day itself. the turnout rate is lively on if ground for the republican party. dan points out a very important challenge that the romney campaign has had from the beginning. his pathway to 270 is much more narrow than the p's. which is why the messaging is important. the ground game is very important for these guys. i understand 18% of the folks voted. the absentee requests are up particularly in the battleground states. don't stop because early numbers may point in one direction or the other. they have to keep pushing. they have to push hard. after the next two debates for the folks still

as i said, nevada, colorado, iowa, florida, all ad heats, president or governor romney up a point orbeginning to see evidence this race could get interesting outside the battlegrounds we've been focusing on these past many months. yet another poll out of pennsylvania showing a close race there. this has been a state that's been in the president's basket. no romney campaign ads, no romney campaigning in the state of pennsylvania. he went there to raise the money, but this poll, 49 for the president, 45% for governor romney. i want to show you why the campaign is increasingly confident going into the second debate and why it's so important. virginia and north carolina, the numbers there are getting better for governor romney. florida, getting better for romney. even ohio where the president still leads getting better for governor romney. ohio, colorado, and nevada now dead heats, improvements in the last week or so for governor romney. why do they like this in the romney campaign? this is the 2008 map. all of those states were carried by president obama. let's go back in time, 2001, al

romney picks up ohio and, say, he wins florida and north carolina and virginia he only has to win one more. it could be new hampshire or nevada or colorado, or iowansin, if he wins ohio he has a good chance to be the next president. >>shepard: the idea pulling out of north carolina i remember two daze before the election when al gore decide not to go home to nashville because no gore ever lost tennessee and he lost tennessee and if he won he would be our president. >>chris: i don't think skit likely he will lose north carolina and win virginia and florida. if he loses north carolina he will lose more states in the southeast. you only have limited resources and a limited number of places to put them if he cannot care north carolina he is in more trouble than just there. we have foreign policy debate on monday but we will not wait, we will do it sunday. we will have dick durbin and senator graham debating libya and syria and iran and all those depressing things you were talking about. and that was interesting. and we are startled by the numbers and we will have the head guy at gallup to try to explain to us how he could be seven points ahead nation
