affecting tens of millions of people from virginia and the carolinas all the way south to the florida panhandleans. the weather channel's kate parker is in savannah, georgia, for us. >> reporter: you know what, ari, you wouldn't typically expect to see someone from the weather channel for a winter storm to be in savannah, georgia. but here's the deal, this town, this city is not prepared for winter weather. and so we were monitoring the situation, we did see ice here, freezing precipitation here, but nothing like what we have just down the road. as you know, the weather channel headquarters are right down the road in atlanta. if we wanted to get there right now, we couldn't. folks that are in atlanta have significant delays. not talking just measly old delays on your evening commute, we're talking 14 hours to get home from the office, 20 hours to get home from the office, and that's if you don't abandon your car there on the roads. as you know, atlanta hartsfield/jackson airport was closed for quite a long time as far as arrivals and departures go. that is open, and they say the runways are rea

already seeing improvements across the deep south and in the florida panhandle.th the freezing rain is falling. indications, freezing rain falling in northern mexico. the heaviest of the snow, in eastern north carolina. southeastern virginia, coming down heavily at times. but even here we'll see it improve through the morning. the area of low pressure departs out to the north and east taking the ice and cold with it. the cold filters in. most spots held below freezing. not much chance for this to melt. so roads will stay dangerous through the day. as much as 6 to 10 inches in eastern north carolina before this storm is done. back to you. >> treacherous conditions out there. thank you, jim. here's a look at the rest of the nation's weather. lake-effect snow will dump up to a foot over the great lakes region and it will be clear across the midwest. mountain snow over the rockies. and rain over much of the west coast. >> temperatures are warming up considerably. just about everywhere. high teens and low 20s for the upper midwest. 43 for kansas city. 56 in denver. se

you can see them stretching all the way down to parts of the florida panhandle. we did actually have some advisories early this morning into central florida. now, you've heard this term polar vortex, and that's really just very cold air that's always in place across the poles, but a piece did wreak off and produce these record-cold -- break off and produce these record cold temperatures. it doesn't directly influence conditions at the surface, but it is something that is going on and has, actually, always happened. you can see in baltimore record low temperature set, 3 degrees, only 4 degrees in new york city and in atlanta, yes, you were in the single digits this morning, 6 degrees, a record low temperature. as we have this cold air going over the great lakes, we actually have some lake effect snow. very significant at times where we actually have a blizzard warning in effect for the city of buffalo with strong winds and an additional 1-2 feet tore cast off of lake erie and also off of lake ontario. the extended forecast out here, much better. take a look at atla

the cold air all the way down in the panhandle of florida. look at the windchills. by tomorrow morning it will feel like 36 in chicago. 22 below in cleveland. 18 below in syracuse. new york city will feel like 1 below. and 38 in charleston. now, with this big winter snow and ice storm, here is what is happening. this cold air coming down, funneling all the way down into florida. gulf moisture riding up and over it as it does. it's fairly shallow to begin with. and so that's going to be ice. and then as we go to the north, we're going to be looking at snow out of this thing, as far as ice accumulations, we expect from myrtle beach to charleston, back to albany, virginia, up to half an inch. that is going to be crippling. and the snow, brian, from myrtle beach and on up to norfolk, we're talking anywhere from 6 to 9 inches. the good news is if we hang in there until friday, temperatures actually rise above normal for a good portion of the country. >> all right, al, we'll look for the very latest from you tomorrow morning. al roker in the studio. al, thanks. >>> and in
