floyd bennett has a rich heritage. many of the world's most legendary aviators used this airfield, including amelia earhart. this is a replica of a plane that took off from here in 1933 and made history. >> eight days later, landed here in floyd bennett field. the first man to fly solo around the world, a one-eyed pilot called wiley post. >> whether it's faithfully re-creating a replica or restoring an actual aircraft that's logged hundreds of hours in the air, all the work here is being done by volunteers. marty gave us a tour of some of the aircraft harp is restoring. >> this is a 1940s, '50s, and early '60s anti-submarine warfare airplane. two propeller-driven engines and there are two jet engines. the jet engines would be used to help it get off the ground, but then they could fly slowly for extended periods of time. >> because of the propellers? >> because of the propellers. and that's what they would do, is float around up there looking for unfriendly submarines. this, scott, is a c-97 -- the "c" meaning "cargo."

. >> reporter: tons of relief supplies were brought into floyd bennett field in brooklyn. national guardsmen and the red cross seemed a lot more visible and fema set up relief centers throughout the storm zone. >> fema was very helpful. they came out. we were in need of clothes. in need of food. and any donation that the people have given us, we're very grateful. >> reporter: because supplies and emergency services have been at such a premium, new yorkers have wondered all week why on earth the stay's legendary marathon was still on schedule to take place sunday. early this evening, it was canceled. and on staten island, where the race always begins, residents said thank goodness. >> thank god. my reaction is they're coming to their senses and realizing that these resources are going to be needed where it's truly needed. >> reporter: deputy mayor howard wolfson explained why. >> it became clear that the marathon, which is really one of the very best days in the life of the city, which is a moment of unity and happiness and joy and a celebration of everything that is new yo

we've established a base at the floyd bennett field here in new york. that's where we're bringing all the food and water. that's where the national guard picks it up and takes it out to the delivery centers around the boroughs. 657 housing inspectors are already on the ground here helping individuals look at their houses, make a decision as to whether the house has any possibility of being restored or whether it's a total loss. we have 3,200 fema personnel working this storm in the northeast. and more are on their way. 11,800 national guard already are deployed in the impacted states. and we expect more to come. as was mentioned, 258 red cross shelters have opened. nine federal search and rescue teams have been deployed, supplementing state and local efforts. and they have searched more than 3,300 structures in queens and 870 structures here in staten island. with respect to other assets that are coming in, we all know that power remains the fundamental issue. you should know that president obama has said that all of the federal government is here to he
