here is a satellite image of fall foliage. you see the sort of brownish colors here. these are the allegheny mountains in pennsylvania, the maryland border. most of the color here is more muted than it is farther north. there's more maples around in new england. adirondacks, vermont, new hampshire. this was taken late september as the autumn color is coming on strong there. upper peninsula, a lot of color there. the northern part of the upper peninsula. even from space, autumn color can be quite visible. cloudy and rainy weather in september and october usually means more drab autumn leaf colors. now if we have an abundance of sunny days, we have a very good chance of having brighter, more vivid and widespread colors this year. how long the colorful leaves remain on our trees has a lot to do with how windy our weather gets in early november. strong winds will bring most of them down very quickly. >> and you can see more of the fall foliage at the national arboreteum in northeast washington, one of the secret treasures of the city. for more weather stories join us next
