alameda county food bank wants your help and they need donations to help local families. shawn chitnis with why the need is greater than ever. >> reporter: we are at the alameda county community food bank where they're working hard to get fad to those that need it. in alameda county, one in four are facing food insecurity. let's learn about the goal that they have at the food bank and talk about that. what is that goal? >> people think about the holidays and food banks a lot, especially because of the need. it's also a critical time for fund raising. this holiday season, our food bank needs to raise over $14 million just to meet our budget. >> reporter: that's important because $14 million used to mean something different. >> the last full year before the pandemic, $14 million was our annual budget. so what we were operating on a few years ago, that is just about 50% of our budget now. >> reporter: let's talk about what happened coming out of the pandemic. people were receiving more money from the government and food banks were receiving more funding. that's not the case

let's talk about the people that benefit from the good people here at the food bank. more than half of them know what it's like to choose between food or medicine, food or gas. prices are up, and that has a direct impact. so that's why so many good people in our community are needed. ron with redwood credit union, your organization raised some money. why did your organization get involved? >> this is such an important part of elevating the wellness in our community, and it's important to us to make that impact in the community. >> reporter: what's the impact of $50,000 here at sf marin food bank? >> so $1 means two meals. $50,000 means 100,000 meals. that makes a difference for so many. and this partnership is so important because it's san francisco and marin county. >> reporter: and what's amazing is the fresh food available as well. people equate food banks with canned foods and nonperishables, but look behind me. >> yes, at this point we're distributing 70% of fresh fruits and vegetables to our participants, and that's really important to us. >> reporter: i love how

you hear food banks and sometimes we equate that with canned food. these are pairs from lake county. lucky we are to live in and ski area that has abandoned the natural food to get on tables. we can celebrate that, and we do celebrate that but we also know that the food bank is facing a budget shortfall and that leads to a very serious conversation. >> we are short over $1 million from where we should be this time of year. we raised almost half of our entire year's budget in this short window in the million dollars equates to over $3 million in food that would otherwise go to the community. >> somebody told me 59,000 people served by november and then need had gone up to 61,000. that is in real time, the need going up for us. that is why we are so grateful for volunteers matching that need. >> absolutely. we need the funds . we need the volunteer time. thankfully, this time of year, companies will come to the food bank and donate their time. in january, that falls short. when he people to be volunteering year-round in order for us to continue to do w

on this tuesday morning, volunteers are at it again at the san francisco marin, food bank. >> packing up groceries for those in need seniors, the disabled and families that just don't have enough to make ends meet the food deprivation and the hungry in this country is. it is it's something that we it shouldn't exist. and i think we should do everything we can to make sure at least people have the basic needs of the community, and while some of this food is donated, much of it has to be purchased and therein lies the problem. donations are down. we've only reached about 37% of our annual fundraising goal and we need to h1t about 67% by the end of december before the pandemic, the san francisco-marin food bank served 32,000 households a week. >> but now that number has climbed to 50,000 only at this point, much of that additional government support has gone away. >> we've seen a lot less support from the federal government, from local governments, from the community that we were in the height of the pandemic. yeah, we're still serving almost as many, almost many people. so we really nee

food banks across the bay area rely on people's generosity to help people in need.sue so extreme, now is the time to donate. shawn chitnis has more. >> reporter: we are at the alameda county community food bank. this is where volunteers come in to sort the produce that goes into the meals helping people in the community. we want to say hi. let's talk about why advocacy is important for the food bank. >> folks at home are probably familiar with our work. folks may not be as familiar that we have been doing advocacy work at the food bank for over 20 years. >> give us a sense of what you have done in the past and how it helped. >> a couple of years ago we passed legislation that made universally free school breakfast and lunch permanent in california. >> we are past the pandemic. the need has never been greater. what kind of advocacy are you doing at this time. >> we work to make sure that nutrition benefits are available to all regardless of immigration status. >> reporter: that is one more reason to remind people to volunteer, make a donation. you can do that by goin

and so by giving to your local food bank, you are also just helping to support this huge food safety has grown, the level of support this year hasn't kind of kept up with it. there's a goal that you have at second harvest of silicon valley to get to by december 31st, correct? >> that's right. we have to raise $15 million by december 31st. and just like you said earlier, unfortunately this year, we are receiving fewer donations than we were last year even. and so we are really struggling to be able to get there. this is our most important fundraising time of the year. >> and by december 25th, there is another goal, and there's a big match if that one happens, correct? >> that's right. if you go to our website right now, your gift will be doubled due to a generous match. and so this is a time where, you know, already for every dollar donated we can provide enough food for two meals, and this doubles that to four meals for every dollar you donate. >> so, leslie, how important is the help, even if it's just a dollar or two or even an hour or two of volunteering? >> it's really critical.

for the last 15 years, janet dog has been volunteering at the san francisco marin food bank, loading with groceries for seniors, the disabled and families that just don't have enough to put food on the table every night. we should do everything we can to make sure at least people have the basic we need of the community, and while it's true, some of this food is donated. a good portion has to be purchased. the problem is donations to the food bank are still quite a ways away from where they need to be every year. we need to raise about 66% of our annual budget by the end of december a lot here and gifts in december. so the big fundraising time for us. >> and we're about 37% of the way during the pre-pandemic years. the san francisco marin food bank served about 32,000 households a week. >> that's skyrocketed during the height of the pandemic. and it's now leveled off to 50,000 households. still many more mouths to feed than before during the pandemic. we saw outpouring of support from the community. >> from local and federal governments. and a lot of that support has gone away. so we
