ford, with us today. she is a highly articulate spokesperson on issues related to breast cancer and with her mother, betty ford, helped establish october as national breast cancer awareness month. susan has been extremely active with the betty ford center and its programs to address addictions and served as chairman of its board for five years. susan also has a very special role as the official ship sponsor of the "uss gerald r. ford" aircraft carrier cvn-78 that is under construction. this new ford class carrier will be christianed in 2013 and commissioned in 2015. susan is also a trustee of the ford presidential foundation and serves as co-chair of the foundation's program committee. she is an avid supporter of all we do at the library and museum and played the key role in convincing our speaker to fit this into his schedule today. along with her brother, steve, susan has stepped forward to represent the ford family at many events in grand rapids and across the country, giving very generously of her tim

. >> what was the relationship between president ford and president reagan like, especially after the 1976 primary challenge? >> well, you want me -- oh, that's a comparison question. i don't think i'm giving away any secrets to say not all that good at that time. it later became -- it later became better. that was a very tough primary, and it's -- it's quite natural that -- with competition like that, there's going to be some tension, and there was some, and there was some on -- on both sides. i have written two books about my political and public service. the last one was more about my political service, and what -- i was telling susan earlier. there's a chapter in there where i'm sitting in the oval office with president reagan, just the two of us, because i was his chief of staff. even though i ran two campaigns against him, get this, get this, i was president ford's delegate hunter in the contest of the nomination governor reagan, and we won, and then i was george h.w. bush's campaign manager against ronald reagan in the fight for the nomination in 1980, and yet ronald reagan ask

yes, bill ford of the ford motor company. 107 years of technology and innovation to safe and efficient and affordable transportation. bill asked me to leave boeing where i had spent my entire career to join a company halves struggling and an industry that faced incredible difficulties. it was another gem. of course we have to recognize a gem when we see one. we have to be open to life's experiences and expect the unexpected. from my perspective, the call from bill ford came from out of the blue. it was one of the seemingly random things that happen in life. but because i was open to the possibilities, i i decided the right way to follow my passion was to join bill and the ford team. boy, there were plenty of gems waiting for me at ford. but by working togethers as one global team, we have been able to fully leverage our resources around the world. today we've turned things around, we are creating an exciting, viable and profitably growing company for the good of all stake holder. we're building great products, creating a strong business, and we are contribute to go a better world. the

and once we put these programs in place for ford, we sat down and negotiated a deal with them. it's resulted in a $600 million investment in their assembly plant giving us a totally new flexible assembly plant. 4500 jocks. three shifts. we are going around the clock now. 8,000 jobs in all when you include their truck plant. and ford will tell you they wouldn't be doing that today if it it wasn't at the commonwealth and kentucky and louisville stepped up for them. >> so then the next step is the if the federal government hadn't been active in rescuing gm and chrysler, would ford and its suppliers have survived to announce the jobs investment in louisville? >> no. ford may have, because they didn't end up taking any of that incentive program as you recall from the federal government, but obviously the other ones did. and, oh, i don't think you would have a recognizable automobile industry today if the president and congress, and let's don't forget congress was there too both democrats and republicans to help bail out of auto industry. i think it was a great investment for us in t

he understood president ford's motivation. lets get the country healed. again, what i say often in this conversation, he was very much a process person. he thought -- you let the system carry forward. and -- but he wasn't strong. he didn't have -- in other words, i remember this conversation we had. he just said i understand -- again, he knew very well and had a good relationship with president ford. he said i understand. you understand how we have to move on. have to keep being -- institution process. >> by the way, since we are talking about -- vice president ford, later president ford, do you remember the politicking around this selection of the vice president by president knicks son and the fact john connally was his first choice? >> mm-hmm. >> what -- >> and then -- you know, a lot of the conversation was -- had to filter out. a lot of conversation we picked president ford because -- who would want him as president. that was a very common sort of thought at the time. it was irrelevant to us. i remember rodino, he liked ford. he thought he was a fine,

that about two weeks after gerald ford became president and everyone remembers the doubts about ford's capacities at that time, he recounts kissinger recounted that a russian seaman jumped off a boat in baltimore harbor and sought political asylum and kissinger recounted a meeting he attended in which they went around the table and all the foreign policy experts all realists, including kissinger, advised ford to return him to the russians. and then when they got to ford, the president, he said, are you kidding me? this is america. this is america. we're not going to do that. now -- by the way, kissinger told this as proof of what a great president ford was for rejecting his advice. [ laughter ] now, i take this as a pivot moment because it also coincided with legislative activity and what led to drl, et cetera. but i think this continues to be very much on the forefront much our thinking. we mentioned the chen case. there's a question, what do we do with this person seeking our support? this is america. this is what we do. it is a core part of a nation that conceives itself -- sees its

[ laughter ] you ask about the tension, there it was. >> what was your biggest challenge as secretary of state in the bush 41 administration? >> i've said to people that i was an extraordinarily fortunate individual to be secretary of state when i was. we used to live in a bipolar world where we had the soviet union and the united states, it was the cold war. and then the soviet union collapsed, communism imploded, communism collapsed, the wall came down, and we were in a unipolar world. the united states was the only super power out there and everybody wanted to get close to uncle whiskers. i mean, i was secretary of state at the time. my job was a held of a lot easier because everybody wanted to get close to the only remaining super power. and so we got a lot of things done. what did we do? we were able to preside over a peaceful end to the cold war. the cold war didn't have to end peacefully. it would have ended with a bang instead of a w

the wrong thing for president ford to do at the time. the white house correspondent i've come to feel and i think you feel the same way, bob, had he not done it the country would have been bogged down in this come to complete stop. but you know president ford told me an interesting thing once, he said, i asked him i said, did he ever thank you? he said, no. he never did. at least not directly. >> and spent some time talking to ford about the pardon and why did do you this, and he finally said, i didn't do it for nixon, i didn't do it for myself, i did it for the country. we had to get over watergate. and in a series of interviews gerald ford said that he had actually been offered a deal for the pardon by al haig who was nixon's chief of staff. he said, but i rejected that, he made very passionate and convincing case that ford, unlike nixon, had said what is the national interest here? what is the larger purpose of my office. he paid a big political price -- >> probably lost to jimmy carter. >> i think a great tact of courage. >> bob: i t

if nike, ford and r.i.m.re any indication, this earnings season could be a little interesting. >> and it already has been interesting in terms of at least the preannouncements we've gotten in this season or leading up to it versus what we saw in the first quarter. there's no doubt the quality of earnings or the lack of earnings growth is a concern and has been a concern for this market for the last few weeks. as for ford, applied $570 million loss from non-north american operations. that includes asia. not just europe where we know there's a great deal of weakness. we'll see what gm does. we've also been -- there's also been concern there about their business particularly in europe. but we go to this global growth theme or lack thereof and this certainly doesn't do anything to mitigate concern. >> yeah. >> and what they say specifically about europe is extremely troubling, they're saying that europe has deteriorated significantly since just the start of the year. and you think about the other automakers like

[applause] >> thank you, theresa. it is an honor to be here and dad had a wonderful relationship with the press. every morning, he would get up and to his last day, he would have a stack of five or six newspapers that he would read every morning. the last one he read was always be "grand rapids press." he said you know what congress and the white house is doing because of "the washington post" you find out of it is working when you read your local newspaper. that is where he thought the rubber finally hit the road was the local press and they were the things to find out what people were doing in washington, d.c. and if it was reaching the people. that was his theory on the press. i am honored to be here and the ford family is glad to be here and we have trustees from the family. my sister susan and my brother mike, if you guys would stand and say hello? i remember early on congressman gerald ford, future president ford, is impeachment is what a majority of the house and 2/3 of the senate says it is. and people said, oh, poor geary ford, played too much football, doesn't understand what this is. you know, what congressman ford says is a terse, but profound statement of an impeachable offense. >> did you find your view shifted? >> i think my own view shifted a little bit. i was worry the about the bright line criminal crime requirement early on, and ultimately came to the view that impeachment was a remedy directed at a defect, usually between the branches of the government. usurping the powers or functions of another branch or perhaps dereliction, failing to discharge the duties incumbent on you for your branch. we said a lot about the take care clause. the president takes care that the laws be faithfully executed. and there was a feeling in the whole mess with the watergate conspiracy and misuse of the fbi and cia that the president had not taken care that the laws be faithfully executed and that -- you know, it took a while to get t
