we're on track to sell a huge number of cars in this country, buy ford. why ford?st of all, it's the best auto company in america. it likely sold 2.2 million cars in the u.s. last year. it is the first domestic auto company to get back to prerecession levels. the ford focus was the best-selling car on earth last year, and when you include the fiesta and the f-series pickup, ford makes three of the top ten best-selling cars worldwide. nobody else has that many. ford's u.s. business, fantastic shape. ford's operating profits in north america are at the highest level since 2000 in the latest quarter, and that is huge. plus we know that housing prices are on the rebound. when that happens, consumers feel wealthier and more likely to spend on a new car. buy buy buy. with the fiscal cliff a thing of the past, we don't need to worry about income taxes going up for 98% of americans, something that might have trimmed car sales. ford controls 16% of the u.s. auto market. two-thirds of the domestic sales come from light trucks. but the company is shifting focus to smaller car

ford unvailed the future of ford pickup truckings today at the detroit auto show.spoke exclusively in the wake of this to the ford ceo and president, alan mulally asking him what the favorite feature of the new concept truck is. look at that! >> i think the neatest thing that we're communicating with the new atlas concept is what we'll do on further improving the capability, but also the fuel efficiency and the safety features, but most importantly, being seamlessly connected to the internet so that everybody can use this for all the construction work that this ford f-series is known for. liz: 53% of the f-series trucks ordered in the past year were v-6's. clearly, that's what the customer wants, save on gas, but stillment the power. will you be able to deliver that? >> liz, absolutely. we sure will, and to your point, that's exactly the essence of the truck is because with the e ecoboost engine and turbo charging, we move from v-8s to v6s and further down. you have lower torque, great for capability, but a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency with that too and lower

ford in my research, but she was very keen on barney ford and did led me to do more research. barney ford was one of these remarkable men during the reconstruction era who was a, you know, escaped slave who went out west and--during one of the gold rushes in colorado and found one of these huge lodes. well, of course, he was run off of it, but that didn't stop him he sort of went and made another fortune down in nicaragua doing catering, came back up to wyann in colorado and built two of the finest hotels out there, went on to become, i believe, the first african-american in the colorado legislature, was very active in abolitionist movements and getting people out of the east, out west, sponsored a lot of people and just sort of--they called him 'the black baron' at one point. c-span: died in 1926. >> guest: yes. yes. c-span: but on--in that same area where you're talking about

ford is back, baby. in america at least. still one big roadblock for the second biggest automaker in the land. let's find out what that is. phil lebeau with us. i want to ask a basic question. when i heard you give the numbers on ford, blowout, $3 billion. >> absolutely. >> what's going on with the stock? >> the problem is fourth quarter, great, 2013, that's the focus. let's give the good news, if you will. when you look at the fourth quarter, much better than expected. they beat the street by $0.06, revenue better than expected. here is the issue, mounting in europe, wider than expected in 2013. going back to '11, lost money, $1.75 in 2012. this year they have increased it, expected to lose $2 billion. the problem, the greater expected losses in europe is basically driven by weaker sales for the entire auto industry and a stronger euro. you put that together and that's where you get the expected $2 billion loss. another concern that's caught a little attention on wall street is this chart right here. see the yen has been we

the concern is, ford doesn't think this year will be much better than last year. the auto maker earned 31 cents a share, up from a year ago and six cents better than forecasts. revenues jumped 5.5% to $36.5 billion while global sales grew by 7%. much of that strength came from the north american market. but, as ruben ramirez reports, 2013 may bring with it some bumps in the road. >> reporter: 2013 may well turn out to be a year that ford gets stuck in neutral. while sales in north america are revving up, europe and the company's continuing investments in asia could pull it back to neutral. >> europe is just having all sorts of structural problems, and i don't see that turning around anytime soon. we've seen some wobbles in south america and in asia, but all around the globe everyone looks the u.s. as the real bright spot in terms of automotive sales. >> reporter: here in the u.s., ford says total auto sales could hit 16 million. that would be up more than a million units from 2012. >> we think that we will see stronger results in north america in 2013. we think th

we're going to talk ford now. check out shares of ford as the company reported earnings.for the fourth quarter. automotive revenue was 34.5 billion. that was also above consensus and cnbc's phil lebeau has been speaking to ford's cfo and joins us with an update. phil? >> andrew i just got off the phone with the cfo from ford and two things stand out. one of those you just saw as we were taking a look at the ford chart. when it comes to north america, incredible strength that the company is seeing there. look at this, profit margins for the full year coming in at 10 % 10.4%. that compares with 8.3% last year. in the automotive industry, if you get profit margins up above 8%, 9%, you're doing well. up above 10% you're running on all cylinders. he expects that to continue this year thanks to pricing and volume and they're start being to benefit from the mixed rotation more towards full-size pickup trucks with the f-series is the bread and butter of ford. in europe they're guiding for a greater than expected previously expected loss of $2 billion this year that's driven in pa
