henry ford. but let's give at least a little bit of background on henry ford. he is in exceedingly interesting person. he is born in a very small community. springwell township in michigan. today we would say he was good at the stem subjects. yes, he is good at mathematics and engineering, which in those days was mechanics, and very bad at reading and writing. he spends a little time and actually becomes a good friend of thomas edison, who also was not a great lover of the jewish people. he then spent a lot of time as a young person working to create an auto engine. you know, in your generation people work in their garage to make apple computers. and if you have one of the original apple computers built in steve jobs's garage, it is worth an absolute fortune. but in henry ford's day, you people who were gifted worked in their sheds to make an automobile that would be cheap and that would really allow for what would become a transformation of the country. and henry ford succeeds in that. he, like

how did john ford view his service in the u.s. navy? >> ford was really proud of his service.write about. in fact, he became a grandfather during the war. he had been old enough to serve in the first world war, although he didn't. so for ford i think the war was a proving ground. he really wanted to test his courage, and although he was, you know, at least once directly in the line of fire i'm not sure that ford ever believed that he was courageous. in fact, at one point he said, all i know is that i'm not a brave man, that i'm a coward. that was after he had been at d-day. so ford was really proud that he had served, and, in fact, when he completed his sort of decommissioning papers he said he would do it again if called upon. one of the things ford did right after the war was start a place called the farm, which was sort of a combination rest home, clubhouse, barroom, getaway for the men in his field photo unit and it was a place that he decorated with, you know, every medal and recognition that he had ever won during the war. that was something he was really obsessed with,

ford, pretty flat for the year, though. the ford f-150 not out there yet. there you go. and toyota had a pretty solid year too. as you report, the strength comes on the fuel efficient cars versus the trucks. what do you think came on top with gas under $2 a gallon. take a look at cars like the ford fiesta. down 17%. down 11% the year. the toyota prius had a tough year. and the chevy volt maybe the toughest of all. 38% for december and 20% for the year. a new volt is coming out. on the other side of it, trucks. trucks were huge. not only is the benefits of the economy being seen in the trucks. but also, you know, the price of gas as well. the silverado had a great year with the f-150 lagging. the ram was up 32%. and the f series down .3% for the month and down a full percent for the year. for ford, for the 33rd consecutive year, the ford f series was the best-selling vehicle in the u.s. for the 38th consecutive year, the best-selling truck. i will be telling you why gm thinks it actually beat the f series with its trucks on the willis report in december. i'll show you the
