jack: to put into perspective tesla has 60% of the ev market, ford and gm are 11%.ago when gm had to be rescued by the government frankly it seems worse is this an accidental threat to the big three carmakers? >> it is an interesting point that you make. since the rescue and the financial crisis, they have done a tremendous amount of work on the balance sheet, on the income statement, becoming profitable at lower levels of auto production. they are actually in really good shape. i don't necessarily think it is a crisis for them, the transition that electric vehicles. it's more a question can they do this profitably and if they cannot do it profitably it is a problem for the stocks. both companies are starting the process in better shape than they were ten or 15 years ago. it is a good thing, tesla is dominating and having trouble catching up. >> and ev sales grow government incentives disappear in the coming years? >> a question elizabeth. we have always had incentives and incentives on the purchase side are usually intended to equalize the cost of ev versus a tradi

gm a little less. we think there space is lower than ford and gm and more diversified in earnings outside the u.s..e need to figure out how long the strike will last. matt: what is behind the push to transition to electric vehicles beyond the typical all tourism we usually see from giant conglomerate corporations. is it consumer demand? why are they shifting here? philippe: it's not consumer demand in itself, though they have done a good job convincing the general public that electric vehicles are valuable. in general terms of usage of energy ev's are more efficient than any transportation. i think that's probably a long-term trend. otherwise it is regulation. we have seen that in china and even more in europe. it is a combination of different factors. they could be convinced it's a viable solution with tesla and we should recognize that. right now the case with options is difficult. the first phase was easy in a way. you have expensive cars. then, you had incentives. i think you move into a situation where you need to be able to sell more affordable cars then it's challenging. from a u.s. perspect

ford's u.s. production. and gm's lansing delta township, 2300 uaw members. that's where they build the chevy traverse, gm enclave. if you look at the total number of strike locations for the uaw in the united states, it now is up to 43 locations across the country. five of them are final assembly plants. two for gm, two for ford, one for stellantis. let's take a look at shares of the automakers. let's talk about stellantis. shawn fain said they have seen some meaningful progress in terms of the discussions with stellantis. not enough at this point, guys, to say, yeah, we think they'll get this resolved soon, but that is the way he characterized the fact that they are encouraged by the pace of discussions there and as a result, they did not call for new strikes at any stellantis facilities here in the u.s. again, the strikes that were announced, those start at noon eastern time. guys, back to you. >> phil, going back to well before the strike, there were those who argued they didn't think they would go against all three automakers, that they would do a patter

and ford are undercutting each other, as well. gmsn't want ford's plant to qualify for the ev subsidies that will dictate everybody's staying power down the road. and ford thinks their approach is the only way to do this in an economically feasible way. so they're at odds with each other. >> they always are. kelly, they always are. that is separate. and i know it's hard for people to keep the discussion about the chinese involvement in this plant, the proposed plant in michigan, that ford is working on the license technology. that political discussion is separate from the discussion between ford and the uaw. basically, it comes down to the uaw, once those jobs, about 2500 when it opens up, to be uaw members under the same contract. with everybody else at ford, because sit a subsidiary. if it was a joint venture, the uaw would have to negotiate with the joint venturer in terms of getting those workers organized. so that's the issue there, with regard to this battery plant. bottom line is this, kelly. all of the automakers are in the s

as you look at how many workers are under a uaw contract, for ford, gm, and stellantis, it totals to months, but i think they pretty much bottomed out. there are more than a few analysts say they, look, you're close to the bottom here. if there's a strike, and some pressure on these stocks, you're close to where we think there's going to be a bottom here, and that's why we saw a little bit of an uptick in shares of gm, ford, and stellantis today. melissa? >> phil, how should we think about whether, if there is a work stoppage, even for a day or two, what the economic impact is and how quickly those plants can get back up and running once again? >> a day or two. extremely limited. if it's a week, it's still not that great. you really don't see a major impact until you stretch this out into maybe a four-week, five-week. the real impact would come if you see a strike that stretches out eight, nine, ten weeks. that's when you would start to see real damage in terms of the cost to the automakers. >> all right, phil, thank you. phil lebeau with the latest developments there. stocks today t
