our tom foreman is in washington. joe johns is in new orleans. crystal wright is a d.c. delegate for newt gingrich also in d.c. and we're monitoring rick santorum in green bay, wisconsin to see if he speaks live in just a moment. let's get to our tom foreman. he's been tracking the exit poll data all evening for us. tom, what can you tell us about rick santorum's win? you have been monitoring all the metrics here. we have seen you standing at the magic walls. so we want to get to our tom foreman and to tell you again, we are monitoring again green bay, wisconsin. rick santorum standing by. tom, what do you know? >> we know one thing that made a difference tonight is the religious vote. if we look at the turnout here, you look at the voters that came out, those born again or evangelical christians, 60% and they went heavily for rick santorum as they have before. 60 to 21% according to the exit polls. look at the ones who weren't born again or evangelical, 41 to 36% for santorum. romney edged him out but not by a big margin. and when you look over here, religious believes

>> i feel bad is tom foreman trapped in that virtual world all night?how do we get him snout. >> like mike tv and willy won ca. so what happens? i mean, do you believe it could be some sort of brokered convention? it seems unlikely. >> i think we'll know a lot more about that at the end of the night tonight. this could be the beginning of the end or not. but i think if mitt romney wins ohio, for example, does well in tennessee or even wins tennessee, then he's going to have a compelling case to make about the inevitability of his nomination, about how the party should unite behind him. we've already seen some senior conservatives this week like eric cantor come out a republican leader in the house come out and say he's supporting mitt romney. if romney does well tonight, i think you're going to see some republicans line up like planes at laguardia saying time to endorse now because he's going to be our man. >> you got to have half the delegates plus one, right, to win? he's been having steadily more than half the delegates. right now he's got more than

tom foreman has been crunching the exit poll numbers. he's got some results for us.at do you have? >> let's look at the evangelical and born again voters. people talk about the bible belt. that's it right there. the most evangelicals in the country. if you go to louisiana you can see why it was custom-made for rick santorum to come in and say he wants to appeal to evangelicals. there are a lot of them to appeal to and it worked. 60% of them said they were born again or evangelical christians. gave the nod to rick santorum in a big way. 56 to 21% for mitt romney. if you look at those who say they are otherwise, 40% of the people who voted they gave the nod to romney but only by a little bit. 41 to 36%. the next group over hering, the people that say the religious believes of candidates matter. of the people that voted 42% say it matter a great deal. some say not at all and those that say not much. look there. romney got the nod but not a lot. rick santorum did well in other categories. that said, you have to bear in mind, is there good news for this in mitt romney? th

you also heard the sanford city manager talk about the loss of trust and tom foreman has the evidencen that. >> reporter: you're looking at a youtube video that caused a sensation in sanford, florida, in late 2010. long before the trayvon martin shooting. it shows a young white man punching a black man in the back of the head outside a bar, sending him to the hospital. and yet the police made no move to arrest the assailant for weeks. why? many believe it was that young man, justin kohlson, was the son of a police officer. he later paid medical bills for the wounded man and ended up with a year's probation. but that did little to ease tension, especially in the african-american community. the nypd is right now collecting allegations of such incidents. beatings and intimidation and worse. few appear to be corroborated at this point, but they clearly resonate with at least part of the community. >> we have heard stories with regards to this department of case after case, where black men have been killed or attacked and people have walked free even though those black men were not armed.

todd foreman talks us through the pipeline predicament as it stands now. >> reporter: the president is trying to score something of a hat trick with his approach to the pipeline by voicing his approval for the bottom part of it down here to the gulf of mexico. the reason republicans are attacking, however, is they're saying this is more of a local issue. the states and local municipalities can handle this part. what the president is needed for is the upper part, the part that goes across the international border with canada. that's why they're attacking. why do i call it a hat trick that he was trying to pull off here? first of all, he's trying to address the issue of energy independence. about half of the oil we use in our cars, gas, comes from imported oil, oil that comes from other countries somewhere. about a quarter of that comes from canada, our biggest supplier. the new pipeline by most estimates would bring about 700,000 additional barrels a day. that's not actually a huge amount compared to how much oil we use, but over ten years this number is expected to rise maybe as high a

tom foreman is standing by in washington, d.c. and he'll be our guide tonight as the results start coming in. hi, tom. got any clues about what we can expect? >> well, we know it's important down there, d don, and it's an oldie but a goodie. our exit polls show 53% of the people say the economy is much more important than abortion or illegal immigration. louisiana has about a 6% unemployment rate. they're doing better than the rest of the country. why is it so important there? well, because it's also one of the poorest nations in the country. let's look over here and get an idea of what we see in terms of the distribution of people with wealth in the state. all the dark green areas here show the places with the higher median income. light green means that they have a different, lower level of median income. if we box these in, so far in this election mitt romney has tended to do better with higher-income, higher education voters. rick santorum has tended to do better with people who are of lower income, perhaps lower education. so
