for more on that here's tom foreman. >> when you look at the pattern of air strikes against isis out here you see many isis strongholds hit in many different ways but now the latest focus seems to be on this, areas where isis is accessing oil. why does that matter? because oil is important as a lifeblood for isis. if you look at big cities where there is a lot of oil production like raqqah out here, which has about a quarter million people that's not what these air strikes are aimed at, not the big oil facilities. instead it's in the countryside where isis is running small, small portable oil refineries that they can somehow get value out of and sell oil on the black market. how much does that matter to isis? a tremendous amount. look at all the oil production areas that they are strong in over here and look at the result. these 12 refineries that were knocked out would produce according to u.s. officials 300 to 500 barrels of oil a day. that's being sold on the black market for about $30 per barrel and all of it combined not just these refineries but everything they have is estimate

cnn's tom foreman is joining us with a closer look at targets that are being used right now.e know, tom? >> sure, wolf. we know these are out here beyond where some of the other things have been. we're seeing strikes here and here these days, but right now what we're talking about is focused on this eastern part of syria right over here in some of the oil areas. as we understand it, they are not hitting any of the big facilities. for example, raqqa out here is one of the facilities and about a quarter million people. there are some big oil facilities in that town. this is not what the target is. the target now is further out. one of the areas we're hearing about is called markada. big, open land and not a lot going on here. smaller, portable, type refineries hit out here and this is open territory, and wolf, if you look at this, this is precisely what military planes like this would be great at hitting because they can strike them with precision bombs and have very little risk of an environmental disaster an human disaster by hitting anybody else nearby as compared to raqqa w

cnn's tom foreman has been looking into that. one of the big mysteries about isis is precisely how many fighters do they have at their disposal? >> and this question is surprisingly hard to answer, carol. some estimates are down around 10,000, others soar up to 80,000 men or more. this is happening because isis is building alliances with other groups who share their radical ideology. are those allies members of isis or just temporary partners in crime. it's hard to say, carol. >> the other question people have, how well trained are these terrorists? >> well, a core of this group grew out of members of the iraqi military under saddam hussein. soldiers who were all pushed out of all public service after saddam was toppled, but who still have valuable knowledge of military tactics, strategies and weaponry. other fighters with isis are likely less skilled, but they bring enthusiasm, commitment, medication. they've come from around the region and, indeed, from around the world drawn by these dreams of an islamic caliphate, an islamic
