i should say court-martial at fort hood, texas.blocked prosecutors from offering much of the evidence they wanted to enter to suggest the motive in this case. the judge has said that they could not reference the case of hasan who is the soldier you might remember who rolled a grenade into his supervisor's tent in kuwait in advance of the iraq invasion. also said they cannot combrus evidence about hasan's interest years ago in conscientious objector status in his past academic presentations. whether or not this is going to affect the outcome of the trial, there are an awful lot of eyewitnesss who say that he is the guy who opened fire on fellow soldiers at fort hood. the motive, however, that evidence has been blocked by judge osbourne. we'll keep you updated. heather: and the academic papers could include one he wrote in washington, d.c. area where he basically expressed sympathy for suicide bombers. they said that was too long ago. that was 2007, 2008. jon: i can't believe he remained in the army after all of this. heather: anothe

he was convicted friday in the fort hood shooting spree back in 2009. 13 people killed and 14 people injured in that attack. heidi joe joins us on the fencing face. >> reporter: court is still in session. hassan is in the courtroom, and what stands out most is his demeanor. it's not changed at all since before he was convicted as a mass murderer. now, he is still sitting in that wheelchair. he's dressed in camo uniform. he has that beard. and to give you a picture of how unaffected he appears. he got into a brief discussion with the government about how to calculate his initial date in the service with the military. none of the content of that argument really matter, but the fact that he just talked about it like this was any other day, that really stood out. dell, this isn't any other day. this is when this jury, 13 military officers, will determine if he lives or dies. the judge cautioned him not to continue to represent himself. and hassan said he still wants to be his own lawyer. at this point, dell, i don't know if that's any more surprising, again. >> heidi, the question that h

"he would have a better shot theoretically in a federal prison, or even in a state prison." attorney neal minahan fought and won the right for one of his clients to get hormones in prison. civilian prisons do not have a blanket ban on hormone therapy like the military, and taxpayers have been paying for prisoners' therapy for years. the trial has just begun for the army psychiatrist accused of the fort hood shootings. today he admitted he did it. correspondent casey siegel looks at day one. >> reporter: it was the worst mass shooting at a u.s. military installation in american history, but for the soldiers and families touched by this attack nearly four years ago, the emotions remain very fresh. >> i don't go a day without thinking about this. >> reporter: sergeant howard ray was inside the fort hood medical processing facility and witnessed the rampage. >> did you think you were going to die that day? >> i thought that it was going to be pretty close. >> reporter: as the long awaited court-martial got under way, many of his alleged victims saw him for the first time since that day. >> i can't understand how people would feel, but it's got to be devastating. >> reporter: opening statements moved relatively quickly. the prosecution spoke about 45 minutes, painting t picture of how the 42-year-old army psychiatrist, wearing his military uniform, yelled allah akbar before he fired on fellow soldiers.
