my -- i've been fortunate enough with my experiences, which have all been in the san francisco bay area, to have the ability to go and to listen to a lot of different music and to perform, to go and listen, and i can't say enough what events like this do for young folks for myself who have to negotiate through the pressure of a dual identity. i can remember way back going to the irish arts festival that used to be at ft. mason and in the same day being able to hear kila and angela mcnamera. it was a sonic history lesson in a day. the best thing was, you could talk to any of the people who were there and you could have that history lesson expanded for you. being able to interact with folks like photographer karen rich, who is sitting in the audience right now, being able to interact with kong on his album, bridge across the blue, these events i really don't think that can be taken lightly. for urban american indians we have powwow which are intertribal events that revolve around a shared repertoire of songs and dances like some of the singing you have heard me do here today. it's a time

there is a circus company that i have been fortunate enough to work with the last couple of years. i use elements of dance and choreography and combine that with theater techniques. a lot of the work is content- based, has a strong narrative. the dancers have more of a theatrical feel. i think we are best known for our specific work. in the last 15 years, spending a lot of time focusing on issues that affect us and are related to the african-american experience, here in the united states. i had heard of marcus shelby and had been in join his work but never had the opportunity to meet him. we were brought together by the equal justice society specifically for this project. we were charged with beginning work. marquez and i spent a lot of time addressing our own position on the death penalty, our experiences with people who had been incarcerated, family members, friends of friends. pulling our information. beyond that, we did our own research. to create a picture that resonated with humanity. it is the shape of a house. in this context, it is also small and acts like a cell. i though

fortunately the war was winding down at the time i got my draft number. it was a high one. but right after the world news on the radio or tv, they always mentioned the dow jones industrial average. they either talked or showed the most active stocks and then the ones that did the best or the worst. national video was all from the worst list, i discovered, hence the anger. what i did was write the names down that i heard and i tracked them. i kept them in this ledger, this ledger that i still have. you can see it. look at this. how did klm go out? there's mgm. sweet row xerox, polaroid. i would just go over each one each day and put them down. there's a winner. it was a game. mgm. anyway, so it was terrific. i was just trying to figure out the next move of a stock, even if all i really knew was, frankly, the name continental or the name rca. whatever. most of them were defense stocks. they went up a lot in tandem with the war i heard about. i followed those and a bunch of others. after a year i thought, this was a cool game. cool game imaginable. i wanted to introduce this t
