we do have foster city fire that just arrived here on scene. we will be talking to them and seeing what developments they have for us. now the husband that we spoke to says that the waters did seem to get choppy right when his wife left. >> she was somewhat tired and it got really windy. and sometimes when that circumstance it's easy to get what's called launched. you know you're holding on the sail and gust comes through and you get flipped. >> reporter: and back here live you can see that the chopper again is very close to the water. they are lowering a basket. i don't know if you can make it out there in all of the mist but they've lowered a basket into the water. again, they had a diver come down from that helicopter as well. so we will of course monitor this for you, but the coast guard has expanded its search throughout the bay pretty much. she is an expert wind surfer with 20 years of experience. she did have a hand held radio but her husband says she has not used it. she was wearing a blue safety helmet, a black wet suit, had an orange

i spoke with nick webber from foster city battalion chief.it was, indeed, what we saw in the video. rescue was taking place, we were witnessing live on camera. that is the coastguard helicopter circling over the waters. that area you see is the area between where we are now. this is called coyote point. we are west of the san mateo bridge but north of east third street. this area a lot of people know as wind surf park. they say that kathy was definitely coherent. she was able to respond to their requests. they pulled her out of that water. she will be treated for a bit of hypothermia. foster city was one of several agencies that was part of the search this morning. that search expand in order the morning. they said as soon as daylight broke, they were able to get a visual. they needed that visual aid because of the water temperature from last night, it's 70 degrees. so that helped. all these factors helped to play a part in her sustainability. yrblgs when they saw her, they pulled her out of the water and it was exciting to see all of that un

i know her husband is over at foster city. have you had a chance to talk to her? will she go to the hospital? what happens from here? >> we haven't been able to talk to her yet. she will probably be taken to the hospital for evaluation. but other than that we don't have any other details. >> reporter: now, again, i know you're here and you haven't had a chance to talk to her, but she's 62 years old. we know that she has some health issues. she is going through chemotherapy. this is an amazing story that she made it almost 12 hours after she had gone missing. >> it is. it's a very amazing story and again, the -- we definitely knew her survival rate was up because of the warm water temperatures. she was a very strong swimmer and avid windsurfer so she was very conditioned for the sport which definitely helped but this is a great reminder to the public and to anybody that does participate wearing your reflective life jackets in this case possibly having distress layers and carrying an emergency positioning device. >> reporter: thank you. so grace there it is. cassie

on monday, cathy catan headed out here in the foster city area for a little wind surfing adventure but she ran into trouble when her sail actually broke and so she was stranded out here in the bay and she was holding onto her board and the tides just kind of took her, she didn't fight the tides and a coast guard said that was the right thing to do. the tides initially took her down here south of the bridge. when the tide shifted so, too, did catan. she then headed north of the bridge and up here north of the bridge is where catan was spotted and rescued by the coast guard at about 6:00 a.m. on tuesday. we actually have video of that rescue that i'm going to launch for you and you can see there is the rescue swimmer, he has his fins on, they're lowering him into the san francisco bay. the coast guard then lowers this rescue cage that you see here and once they get the cage down to the water, the rescue swimmer has already gotten catan and he puts her into the cage and you can see them raise the cage back up and as they're approaching the chopper, you can see one of the crew members reac

former foster city councilman ron cox has died. he was 61 years old. the coast guard helicopter rescued the woman near the foster city shoreline just about an hour ago. we brought you the dramatic rescue live as it happened. tara moriarty joins us live with an update. good morning, tear you are. >> reporter: -- tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. officials are breathing a sigh of relief. they are very happy this story has a happy ending. many of them were part of the search efforts. now, the 62-year-old woman was found less than half a mile from where we're stand stand -- we're standing. the coast guard spotted her out there, not far at all from where she was last seen. we watched the dramatic rescue unfold. again about, a half a mile away. her husband was concerned because he said his wife has cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. her health was compromised but he knows that windsurfing always makes her feel better. officials say she was smart because she did not fight the current. >> we believe she's been drifting with the tide probably all night. so when we first got a call, the tide was going out -- first got the call, the tide was going out
