well, you know, a well will get a frac job as they call it 5 million-gallons will go down, sometimes as much as 25 million-gallons and about 20% will flow back. and it's contaminated with oil, as well as the chemicals that we use in thing fromming and it has salt, so you have a water that's vast quantity that has some degree of contamination that has to be dealt with. >> and what is being done currently with that waste water? in the united states about 14% of all contaminating waste water and it is about half a billion per year, gets treated and reused. which are old wells that perhaps big salt domes and just dumps basically. deep deep in the ground, with a lot of safeguards. your program, just did an entire show, in fact, on fracking, what were some of the issues that came up in terms of this waste water being put back into the ground? so one of the big issues that is being raced with the disposal of these large quantities of water that result from the fracking process, is that when those fluids get injected as rigs mentioned, deep into these disposal wells there have been instances

open up this shale that's around us and do it economically, that's where you have the slick water frac, mostly water, a lot of pressure, slickened with some chemicals. >> right. >> but you go back to just after the civil war, the invention, the discovery of oil in western pennsylvania, believe it or not, you had fracking back then, you had a really early form of fracking, because you would drill a well, you could come two, three feet away from an oil seem and completely miss it. your well would miss it, someone figured out if i put a torpedo down the well, create fractures out from that well, maybe i'll create other seems. so the idea really is old as the oil industry. >> we really only seem to have been talking about it for the last couple of years, even if you go to the 1998 date, it's a little bit like the classic yellow volkswagen, you don't see one, suddenly you see one every day. it's almost like a day does not pass when we don't talk about fracking in this country. >> you go back textbook years ago, its was still being taught the shale rock, the source rock, oil and gas is creat

freezing and the oil men here with equipment tied up are working around the clock working to finish the frac site in west texas. the boss told me they need to be selling at $80 a barrel. it's now just around $50. >> the layoffs are just starting. the large oil service companies are announcing thousands of layoffs. locally, small operators are laying people off every day. i heard more today, people that i know. there's no hope of reemployment. >> reporter: new oil may not be pumped now because of saudi arabia pumping at a time when the price is being driven downward. the result is still left to be tacked when the economics change. three months ago, there were 580 wells operating in this area of west texas. it's now down to 450. it would start by summer if barrel stays at $50 a barrel. that means big job losses. not everyone is mourning the fall in the oil price. look at the pump prices. it's cheap to fill up sure. it means u.s. consumers have more to spend on other things. that is driving growth. >> reporter: how much difference does it make in day-to-day life the fact you have extra money to

of the benefits of fracking to type an article ready where minnesota actually produces much of the frac sand. and so the price of fracking santos increased much of of the benefit of minnesota's and wisconsin's. so the benefit of this which george mitchell taking the db research but actually commercializing this, even goes to minnesota which is really good. i had a couple of questions though, one related to that and one to another. this is about jobs. i can tell you to our families struggling because they don't have jobs. we know there's going to be a downturn in employment in the oil patch because of falling oil prices. i'm interested if we can increase the jobs in natural gas production, because of an exportation. north louisiana, that players decrease production because of dry gas, is not what the people want to make a true chemical products. mr. durbin or mr. smith, do all have an idea of thousand jobs will be created if we could i'm sure those -- and shutter is closed down wells and to begin to ship that dry gas to markets that after one dry gas any idea how jobs would be great but?
