the lone liberal rumble joining me tonight francesca chambers of austin peterson let's get back to it yesterday the romney campaign scheduled or turned a scheduled campaign rally into a so called storm relief a vent to help those affected by hurricane sandy the campaign encouraged supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies and food to the rally and deliver them right to mitt romney's hands but since this was a carefully crafted event by the romney camp they made sure to look good by spending five thousand dollars at a local walmart on food that would be on display at the event while supporters were given canned goods to handle romney and at the so-called relief event the ten minute video about romney's life which was first shown at the are in c. was shown to us and it's about more about politics and campaigning than actually helping those affected by hurricane sandy five thousand dollars to give to the homeless i mean what even if it wasn't it was almost it was to buy stacks of food so so that you know they could but they were going to distribute some of the the rescue to the rescu

joining me now is victoria de francesca soto and jonathan capeheart, an msnbc contributor. victoria, what we're seeing in new jersey today with the republican governor working hand in hand with the president, isn't this the way government is supposed to work? >> absolutely. you know, hurricane sandy has shown us that we need abled government that can work together with the states and this role of the federal government working hand in hand with state government flies in the face of what mitt romney and his party stands for, which is centralizing everything down to the state level but regrettably, hurricanes don't respect state borders and you're going to need across state government. so i think we here we saw a demonstration of what truly needs to be done in such a disaster. >> and this was across party lines, state and federal lines, a picture of working together and the president had words for those who had been hit the hardest by hurricane sandy and for those who are working overtime. let me hear some of that, jonathan. >> we need to make sure that everybody who has lost

well, victoria de francesca soto is an msnbc contributor. nia-malika henderson covers politics for "the washington post." president obama took a question about equal pay for women last night and turned it into a broad defense of what he does for women -- or did for women in his first term. let's listen to the president. >> when governor romney's campaign was asked about the lilly ledbetter bill, whether he supported it, he said, i'll get back to you. that's not the kind of advocacy women need in any economy. now, there's some other issues that have a bearing on how women succeed in the workplace. for example, better health care. now, a major difference in this campaign is that governor romney feels comfortable having politicians in washington decide the health care choices women are making. i think that's a mistake. in my health care bill, i said, insurance companies need to provide contraceptive coverage. to everybody who's insured. this is not just a health issue, it's an economic issue for women. >> let me ask you this -- by the way, that

joining us from austin, texas, nbc latino.com and msnbc contributor victoria de francesca.o pardon my bungling of your beautiful name. >> that's okay. >> let's talk about the immigration question, weirdly largely absent from the back and forth between mitt romney and barack obama over the last couple weeks. do you think tonight could be the night? >> you know, i think it will. even though to a lesser extent than i would like to see. immigration is one of these issues that neither the republican nor the democratic party has wanted to touch with a ten foot pole during this general campaign season. on the democratic side obviously because we don't want to remind the latino electorate of the broken promise of not going through comprehensive immigration reform and on the republican side mitt romney doesn't want to soften too much because that would alienate his base at the same time he doesn't want to chip away at that 20, 23% of latino support he has now. they're stuck in a tough place and both parties prefer to keep it on the back burner. >> josh, i want to ask you about this.
