monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. in oakland this morning three people were killed and a woman seriously injured after their car hit a cement wall on a freeway exit ramp. the 27-year-old man from oakland was driving this 1990 buick and was speeding and lost control at the exit. it happened 3:00 this morning. the driver died at the scene along with a 20-year-old woman from hayward and a man from san leandro. a female passenger was taken to the medical center. investigators say some of the passengers had not been wearing seat belts, and an alcoholic beverage was found in the car. the investigation continues. >> the amount of money that california will pay this year to pay its debt is nearly double what it was a decade ago. that's according to a new report from the treasurer. the debt comes from interest on bonds to pay for everything from parks, classroom and high speed rail to funds borrowed to bridge a deficit. california's accident about 8% of the general fund, or $2,500 per person, far more than the national median

nbc bay area's mike francis is in downtown oakland with that part of the story for us. monty? >> reporter: good evening. the occupy oakland movement started about five days ago when people started camping out here. thousands of people today took part in a march from lady college and that march ended here about an hour ago. the march had a message of jobs not cuts. it was organized in part by the group movon.org. while the march and rally focused on jobs there continue to be a number of competing messages out here. we saw signs for legalizing marijuana, anti-war signs, even some speaking out about oscar grant. but for the most resounding message it seems to be about the disparity between the ultra rich and the middle class. actor danny glover was one of the speakers here today. we spoke to him one-on-one about 40 minutes ago. here is how he defined the message. >> people are going to talk about how do i get bread on my family's table? how do i get work again? how do i use my skills as a man with skills or a woman with skills for employment and to make a living? that's the basic

nbc bay area's monty francis is in oakland with that story for us. >> reporter: good evening. represents about 35,000 physicians statewide, and it took the stance even though it says the medicinal value of marijuana remains unclear. the cma says it's an open question whether cannabis is useful for medical purposes but the only way to find out is to legalize it and do more research. more important, the position comes in response to a growing frustration that doctors are being put in the difficult position, deciding whether to prescribe a drug that's legal under state law but illegal under federal law. we heard reaction from the executive director of harbor side health center, one of oakland's four pot dispensaries. it serves about 600 patients a day. >> i'm 100% confident that as the cma and other researchers are given opportunities to look more deeply into cannabis, that they will find what i know. that it's a very effective medicine for a wide range of ailments. >> reporter: not everyone is cheering the cma's decision. the california police chiefs association called it "an un
