francis yacht club in san francisco with the story. >>reporter: dan, the suspension caught a lot of the yacht racers off guard especially considering there is a race coming up this weekend. however the coast guard wants to prevent another tragedy. this video was taken from the santa cruz 50 deception during the full crew farallons race on april 14. 5 crew members low speed chase died that indicate after the boat ran aground on the farallons. coast guard wants an investigation into what happened so it is temporarily suspended all permit for offshore races. >> initial reaction was one of surprise because everybody was planning ongoing on this race. once we understood what was happening i think l it makes a lot of sense. >>reporter: he was in that race about 30 minutes behind the low speed chase. he believes the offshore suspension also has to do with the impending america's cup race. >> we have to have the a racing community bothin the bay and out the bay that is safe and the coast guard is really watching. it's going to be one of the bi

nbc bay area's monty francis is live on coast guard island in alameda with the very latest for us. monty, good evening. >> reporter: marla, good evening. within the last 90 minutes a coast guard helicopter launched from a cutter similar to the boat you see behind me was on its way to rescue those injured crew members. we're told the helicopters has reached the yacht and a rescue swimmer has just been deployed. take a look at the conditions that the crew members were dealing with. this youtube footage was taken on board another yacht taking part in the same race. you can see just how huge these waves were. the 68 foot sailing yacht, "the western australia" almost completed the 700 mile leg of an around the world journey from china to oakland. yesterday the boat was hit by a huge swell and 3 of the 13 crew members suffered broken ribs, some pelvic and back injuries. one woman in her 50s suffered the most severe injuries. a coast guard cutter with a helicopter on board is now within range of the yacht and right now an attempt is being made to air lift injured crew members to safety. >

monte francis has their story. >> reporter: it's true that alfred and george januaski have been down on their luck. one lost their job and lost their house to foreclosure, which is why they were camping up on mt. diablo. you remember all those flashes of lightning, 750 lightning strikes across the bay area. a few of them struck the campground where the brothers were inside their tent sleeping. bolts cracked some asphalt. there were small holes burned into their tent and both men complained of numbness and suffered some minor burns. >> you know, afterwards it's like oh, my god, my feet are tingling, your legs are numb and all of that. but that's already after the fact, you know. it already happened, why do you need to worry. >> reporter: the brothers were not seriously hurt. alfred says he considers the incident just an event of nature, even though people are saying it's a miracle that the two brothers survived. the real miracle that alfred is hoping for, he says, is a job so they can move off the campground and into an apartment or back into a house. live in lafayette, monte fra fran
