i was the project architect for the renovation of san francisco. my background has given me a detailed understanding of the technical complexities and challenges that must be addressed in carrying out successful preservation projects. from how to achieve structural and seismic upgrades to sustainable principles and sustainability. i have been involved for many years in a nonprofit organization focused on the recognition and preservation of the important works of the modern movement i have been involved as an advocate as well as recognizing some of the lesser-knowns historic buildings. i think it is important that the historic preservation commission have a balanced approach to preserve important landmarks and recognizing that success will preservation allows for change as well as the city lives in the gross. -- and grows. i have also tried to be very proactive in our approach to preservation. this pro-active approach has included renovations, a planning code, working with the planning department so that when properties are in this city, they unders

and it's a san francisco landmark. but find out why some people wanted to dynamite the ferry building more than a century ago. all straight ahead on "second look." hello everyone, i'm frank somerville. tonight we are going to take "second look" at days gone by in san francisco. and we start with this film. it's called a trip down market street. for decades, it was thought to have been shot in 1905. that is until a local historian examined weather, car license registrations and newspaper accounts to conclude that it was actually shot in 1906, only a few days before the great san francisco earthquake and fire. last month, the library of congress announced a trip down market street will be one of 25 films added this year to the national film registry for their cultural or historical significance. that film was shot from the front of a cable car and back in 2000, ktvu's george watson gave us this look back at the rich history of san francisco's historic and iconic form of public transit. >> reporter: if it wasn't so danger

lincoln high school up there is one of the largest in san francisco. this reservoir will produce enough power to light up lincoln high school for six and a half years. it provides enough solar and enough energy for 1100 homes in san francisco. it is a start, but it is part of the city cozy green plan. it adds to the city's hydropower, and it is not just for city hall or the hospitals, but in a few more months, it will also be powering the homes that will be built in hunters point. the shipyard development program will be the first 100% greenhouse free electricity at a retail level because we will be bringing that power to them. so it is a good day for all of us to be celebrating all of that. obviously, this would not happen without a lot of partners, but the key person who was the most influential in doing all of this is the mayor of san francisco. during his term, we have made incredible strides in terms of all the kinds of green, green things you want to do, and the mayor is here to finally say this is up, running, testing is complete, and we are goi

i know we can move san francisco forward together. and in the coming days, i will reach out to every member of the board of supervisors and meet with you personally to discuss my ideas and my agenda. and yes, president chiu, i will sit down with you, shortly, to work out the details of our question-and-answer session. i will seek your advice and counsel as we immediately begin to confront the challenges that lay ahead. starting with tackling our budget deficit and finding a new police chief. to the members of the board, i see you as my esteemed colleagues. and i look forward to a relationship based on mutual respect and trust. to our fellow citizens, i'm not going to change. i'm going to open up that room 200 for everybody, daily, and make sure that you know what that is. i present myself to you as a mayor for everyone. a mayor for the neighborhoods, for downtown, for business, for labor, for the powerless, and the powerful. for left, right and everyone in between. for everyone. i will be a mayor who tackles things head on and moves t

by black with the san francisco chamber of commerce -- bob black with the san francisco chamber of commerce. we have an opportunity to marry sports, technology, and media in a way they have never been married together before. we will see images, not just one blimp flying around in the park or the at&t stadium or whatever. we will see many blimps. we will see cameras on boats. we will see images broadcast around the world that will change people's perception of what san francisco and america is. that is something you cannot value in a spreadsheet that we will present on economic analysis. think about how much it costs you to buy a one-minute ad on the super bowl. $1 million? maybe more? we will have months of ads internationally double the projected. that sort of benefit to san francisco's tourist economy, our experience economy, will be unprecedented. when you tie that into what oracle will be presenting on the technological side and the social media side, that will be how we market these games and people watch these games -- those are the other sweet spots for economic development in san f

we need this kind of builder in san francisco. what we don't need is neighbors the signing buildings and putting neighbors against neighbors. i understand the word for it closely with the planners and they have absolute and the project cost of i'd the project. i want to urge you to go ahead and accept latest rendition of the plans that they have developed. i am in support of plot and pepin. the reason that i want to do this is because will happen on them for 50 years from the time it a first part of their business. they always do on incredible job with every project that may take on. i also want to support them because i am an individual who work in san francisco for 25 years. i had to buy in the east bay because i could not afford san francisco this project is everything that is good about san francisco and it would provide of that are affordable. i support this project and i urge you to as well. >> are there additional speakers in support of the project sponsor? >> i am a former homeowner in the neighborhood. i had been a reside

[reading names] >> good afternoon. could i have the overhead please? my husband and i run the sailing program at the golden gate yacht club. the photo that i have of is just one day on the day with our free sailing program to san francisco high school students, courtesy of the bmw oracle team. i would like to be able to share these kinds of days with other yacht club high school's sailing groups are around san francisco bay. there are over 100 high school teams competing throughout california. we are in little bit behind the times of here, but i think we are well on our way to catching up and being able to compete not only with southern california, but the east coast and the world. california maritime academy recently sent one of their sailing teams to france representing the united states, and i think the future of sailing is with the youth, and i'm in favor of the 34th america'

today, the san francisco school district is establishing the first annual san francisco inclusive schools week to join the tens of thousands of students and educators around the country celebrating inclusive schools week each year. whereas the san francisco unified school district is dedicated to the students with disabilities in education's needs. in keeping with the tenants of the students with disabilities act and the san francisco unified school district is dedicated to transforming the schools for striving for inclusiveness at all levels of our programs. whereas today's students are the future leaders of our communities, each and every student is given every opportunity to train, learn, the curious, achieve, xl, inspire our future generations. geffen -- gavin newsom declares december 6th-12 as san francisco inclusive schools week in san francisco. congratulations and great job.
