this was mentioned san francisco has a long history called the san francisco model for how we respond to public health crisis. that is how we responded a generation ago to the aids crisis. i think we saw that again how our city responded to covid-192 and a half years ago and seeing it again today so i want to say how grateful i am to the leadership of our city and public health officialess and senator wiener and president walton and (inaudible) i like to hand it off to tyler, the ceo of the san francisco aids foundation. >> public health crisis. a community filled with fear, unanswered questions and valid outrage. resilient people that had to rise up in support of one another to educate each ort and fight for access for resources they need and deserve. a moment in history where a federal public health response fails a community causing them unnecessary emotional mental and physical harm. no, i'm not talking about chronically hiv policy from the earliest day when the federal government resisted addressing the onset of aids in our country. i reference this very moment in the nation hist

through its san francisco fire academy.lso want to state that members of the bfa were instrumental and played a part in making sure the emt was program in place and we have seen graduates gone on to be emt's and working hard to be firefighters and as we talk about diversity and talk about racial equity and as we talk about taking the steps to make sure that opportunities are available for communities that have been left out of so many city roles and city departments, this is definitely an organization that has been stepping up to the plate to do the right thing in that area, so today, we want to thank and honor them. the first three people who we want to honor are -- the first one is earl jr. who was the first black firefighter here in san francisco and the director of community relations. some of you may know we also named a street after mr. gage. lieutenant edgar bryant who is the second black firefighter with the san francisco department and battalion chief john harris who was the founder and for first president of the s

[♪♪♪] >>> i'm currently an h2 firefighter for the san francisco fire department. i served active duty in the navy. i wanted something that was going to be in the medical field, but not necessarily stay in a hospital setting and i didn't want to stay in an office and this job kind of combines everything i was looking for. everyday's different. there's always something new and to learn. and my first introduction to the department was being surrounded by people of the lgbtq community. and so we were able to get, you know, it just made things a little more comfortable that you could talk to people about things that people necessarily wouldn't understand. i've had to hide myself. able to come out. being able to

to san francisco to see this show.hat after they saw this show they thought they would start their own band. it was a great jumping off point for a lot of west coast punk. it was also, the pistols' last show. in a way, it was the end of one era of punk and the beginning of a new one. the city of san francisco didn't necessarily support punk rock. [♪♪♪] >> last, but certainly not least is a jell-o be opera. they are the punk rock candidate of the lead singer called the dead kennedys. >> if we are blaming anybody in san francisco, we will just blame the dead kennedys. >> there you go. >> we had situations where concerts were cancelled due to flyers, obscene flyers that the city was thought -- that he thought was obscene that had been put up. the city of san francisco has come around to embrace it's musicians. when they have the centennial for city hall, they brought in all kinds of local musicians and i got to perform at that. that was, at -- in a way, and appreciation from the city of san francisco for the musical legen

this is the beginning of san francisco absolutely coming back, and the downtown core here in san francisco is feeling it this week. >> rodney, are you concerned with our image problem when i'm talking about car break-ins, crime, homelessness because it's not just our secret in the bay area. a lot of people know about it cross-country. >> yeah. you know, i think the problems exist much on the west coast, and we're all dealing with that. i'll say the city of san francisco and the police chief and the mayor are doing a great job to try to fix the city as best they can. but we're all being villages about it. we're all helping each other, and san francisco residents, if someone's lost and needs directions, let's help them out because tourism employs so many of our san francisco families and youth, and we need to make sure that that's going strong here for years to come. >> like we said, tourism is the number one industry in san francisco, not tech or anything else. rodney, if you had a magic wand, are there two or three big things it's going to take to get tourism back to pre-pandemic levels? a

i grew up in san francisco kind of all over the city. we had pretty much the run of the city 'cause we lived pretty close to polk street, and so we would -- in the summer, we'd all all the way down to aquatic park, and we'd walk down to the library, to the kids' center. in those days, the city was safe and nobody worried about us running around. i went to high school in spring valley. it was over the hill from chinatown. it was kind of fun to experience being in a minority, which most white people don't get to experience that often. everything was just really within walking distance, so it make it really fun. when i was a teenager, we didn't have a lot of money. we could go to sam wong's and get super -- soup for $1. my parents came here and were drawn to the beatnik culture. they wanted to meet all of the writers who were so famous at the time, but my mother had some serious mental illness issues, and i don't think my father were really aware of that, and those didn't really become evident until i was about five, i guess, and my marriag

♪♪ >> san francisco!his is an exhibition across departments highlighting different artworks from our collection. gender is an important part of the dialogue. in many ways, this exhibition is contemporary. all of this artwork is from the 9th century and spans all the way to the 21st century. the exhibition is organized into seven different groupings or themes such as activities, symbolism, transformation and others. it's not by culture or time period, but different affinities between the artwork. activities, for example, looks at the role of gender and how certain activities are placed as feminine or masculine. we have a print by uharo that looks at different activities that derisionly performed by men. it's looking at the theme of music. we have three women playing traditional japanese instruments that would otherwise be played by men at that time. we have pairings so that is looking within the context of gender in relationships. also with how people are questioning the whole idea of pairing in the first

and in san francisco, we have. and so that is because of your leadership and that is why i want to share, i promise to make it brief, a few of the lessons i have learn here for the past two years. to commissioners, staff and adult allies are here to support but do not be afraid to push for your belief. in this nation, we've seen the black lives movement. we've seen the moment for social justice and climate justice and gun control, all led by youth and this is not because of some crazy conspiracy or crazy thing that youth have ideas, it's because you all deserve to be here. and you do have these ideas and i urge you to push for them. the second thing is ask questions. you are appointed for a reason and you deserve to be here, yes. but you are not here only because of what you know but also because of the potential for you to grow and learn and finally, take advantage of every single opportunity. i remember when i was in the vote 16 campaign, i was quite literately thrown into cameras and action and walk and protests

in the future of san francisco. [cheers and applause] i want to start by thanking and acknowledging the board of supervisors joining us today. thank you for the president of the board of supervisor, are walton and safai who represents district 11 and melgar who represents district 7. thank you so much for joining us here today. [applause] and let me tell you, all of the supervisors and i, when we were kids, we probably, probably wouldn't have thought that we would be leaders of the city. [laughter] because we weren't as responsible as the young people that we see here today. we were having a good time, yes. [laughter] we were going to school because we had to, yes. [laughter] but to take a step like this and apply to be a part of the youth commission is significant. it means that you care about understanding what it means to be involved civically. what it means to give back to your city, to your community, how you understand policy, how you advise people like the mayor and the board of supervisors on things that mat

you are watching san francisco rising. thanks for watching. >> i don't want to be involved in the process after it happens. i want to be there at the front end to help people with something in my mind from a very early age. our community is the important way to look at things, even now. george floyd was huge. it opened up wounds and a discussion on something festering for a long time. before rodney king. you can look at all the instances where there are calls for change. i think we are involved in change right now in this moment that is going to be long lasting. it is very challenging. i was the victim of a crime when i was in middle school. some kids at recess came around at pe class and came to the locker room and tried to steal my watch and physically assaulted me. the officer that helped afterwards went out of his way to check the time to see how i was. that is the kind of work, the kind of perspective i like to have in our sheriff's office regardless of circumstance. that influenced me a lot. some of the storefronts h

san francisco. it had been i'm looking at the soon to be considered enemy neil to planning mr. braub. it had been a planning department guideline in the 1990's. and early i think in 2001 supervisor leno turned it it section 415 of the planning code this med a requirement to have 10% of the units in buildings over 10 units in size. the boardable at certain rates. that changed over time as markets changed. and hen unfortunately in 2012, the board of supervisors and the then mayor edlee decided to include it as a static number in the charter. and it could not be increased when the market was such that it ratings should go high and could not be decreased when the market conscience were such that it should have gone lower. and as a result of that, in 20 late 2015, supervisor kim and i scolded in introducing a charter amendment to take it out of the charter, put it become in law. and that provision allowed for the board of supervisors to regulate by ordinance. and part of that work out was the creation of

the 6 san francisco codes real amendment state and nationally is the san francisco building code. existing building code. mechanical, electric code. plumbing code and san francisco green building code. what the san francisco do in the code adoption package. we carry forward the san francisco amendments the changes specific to our local jurisdiction based on our climatic continues in san francisco and compare it to the changes in the model and then the state code. and then we make the changes and carry them forward. >> what you will see in the package you have is clean up. grandmaal, punctuation and spelling. you will see a lot of check changes meaning the state renumbered certain chapters and we node to make sure our san francisco building code and san francisco amendments align with their changes. also where at the state in a lot of the in the green building code we previously were more restrictive than the state. now the state has caught up with san francisco. and so they took a lot of the language or developed language and moved it in the state code and san francisco will need

francisco bay water board. assessment of depth to ground water for contra costa county continuing work from pathways and (inaudible) 2022. these are proposed studies not yet funded but under consideration to be funded in part or whole with public grant funds. prop 68 proposal, work in the islay creek water shed to investigate changes in the water table due to sea level rise and increases in extreme (inaudible) potential for contaminant mobilization. prop 68 proposal lead by coastal quest, one task of the project would be refined assessment of depth to ground water for santa clara county using the same method of pathways (inaudible) port of oakland sea level rise impact and integration of ground water rise in the bay converivation (inaudible) to help a broad range of stakeholders identify the points of intersection between sea level rise and ground water rise under different time based scenarios. the san francisco bay water board reiterates that hunters point naval shipyard is one of the highest priorities of cl

also in san francisco, the folsom street fair just wrapping up this evening. the event drew a pretty large crowd, many in leather and all sorts of attire kron four's gayle ong. was there. >> from main street to 13 street along folsom and san francisco. the crowd took over. dancing in the streets and showing off all sorts of the tire. if you're wearing anything at all, you are considered a little over wrong there's unity the san francisco phenomena. it's about >> community the folsom street fair dates. back to 1980, for the annual event face challenges during the pandemic. in this year, there's another health concern. san francisco department of public health offered monkeypox vaccines at the fair. meantime, attendees just happy to be it's important because have a community of community everybody to get along tolerance. >> organizers donate all net proceeds from the events to a variety of nonprofits, working public health, human services and the arts in san francisco, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> well, a runaway fire engine damaged 6 cars in san francisco's know

san francisco is not a failed city. san francisco is a city that leads with its heart and yes, that is messy, but it is also our greatest strength. it is why you worked 12, 14, 16 hours a day, nights, weekdays, no rest, months on end, to keep people you didn't know safe. to safe people from dying, make sure people were fed and housed. it is why you worked across departments and sectors and roles and any other line that we could think of and we know there is a lot in government. worked across all of those to give the people what they needed, and it is also why when you asked the people of san francisco responded in solidarity and with solidarity because this is a city that leads with its heart. and at a time when nationally things are still unraveling, this is the leadership that we need more then ever. the pandemic is not quite the crisis it was 2 and a half years ago, but the need to redesign, rebuild, reconnect, that remains, so we need the example that you provided in responding to covid. we need to believe that we c

i grew up in san francisco. my family did in the they came to the country as refugees from a long war. my father at the time was a medical student studying in greece and protested against the ethiopian government revoked his citizenship and lost everything. he and my mother came to san francisco to build a new life. when they came they believed in the american dream. through work and education you can do anything. my dad instead of being able to continue his work in medical school no credits transferred worked 30 years as a taxi driver and they sent us to catholic school. my family was religious and thought it was the best way for us to move forward. i did not agree with everything but i believed being a person for other, being of service and being the change you want to see in the world. i got my msw from berkeley and working to get folks off the street and into recovery and helping those who were incarcerated rebuild their lives. that's why i have done the work over 20 years it help make san francisco a better

in the cultural heart of chinese san francisco. but to do more than that, to revitalize the southeastern part of san francisco, including the bay view, to connect african american and filipino american and other populations to new emerging job centers in mission bay and all the jobs in union square and again here to china town. so, with support from speaker pelosi and a billion dollars of federal funding, we are almost there. we're also really grateful. [cheers and applause] we're grateful to secretary butavig for the bipartisan infrastructure bill. this once in a generation opportunity. [cheers and applause] can provide cities like ours the resources that we need to make a transportation system that works for everyone but particularly the people who have the fewest mobility choices. i also want to make my appreciation known for mayor breed who has continued in her leadership to prioritize the people who need mobility investments and access to opportunity. opportunities that are being created right here in san francisco. how do cities create waste programs like they do in san francisco.e looking into the few which you are and we want innovation. we want solutions. >> it was an outdoor stadium for track and field, motorcycle and auto and rugby and cricket located in golden gate park, home to professional football, lacross and soccer. adjacent to the indoor arena. built in the 1920s. the san francisco park commission accepted a $100,000 gift from the estate to build a memorial in honor of pioneers in the area. the city and county of san francisco contributed an additional $200,000 and the stadium was built in a year. in the 1930s it was home to several colleges such as usf, santa clara and st. mary's for competition and sporting. in 1946 it became home to the san francisco 49ers where they played nearly 25 years. the stayed de yam sat 60,000 fans. many caught game the rooftops and houses. the niners played the last game against the dallas cowboys january 3, 1971 before moving to candlestick park. the stadium hosted other events before demolition in 1989. it suffered da

, and stay right here in san francisco. sf made really provides wraparound resources for manufacturers that sets us apart from other small business support organizations who provide more generalized support. everything we do has really been developed over time by listening and thinking about what manufacturer needs grow. for example, it would be traditional things like helping them find capital, provide assistance loans, help to provide small business owners with education. we have had some great experience doing what you might call pop ups or temporary selling events, and maybe the most recent example was one that we did as part of sf made week in partnership with the city seas partnership with small business, creating a 100 company selling day right here at city hall, in partnership with mayor lee and the board of supervisors, and it was just a wonderful opportunity for many of our smaller manufacturers who may be one or two-person shop, and who don't have the wherewithal to have their own dedicated retail store to show t

[speaking spanish]. because those of us who do this work mayor breed, mcfadden, myself. the community service, larkin street. you know -- lauda. we know that we are changing lives every single day we are saving lives every day. and the press talks about that. they'd talk about you know trashing the streets or homeless encampments but not talking about the lives that are being transformed and the beauty that happens inside buildings like this every day in san francisco. and i think we node

i'm also from san francisco and i graduated and a parent of a san francisco graduate. i'm here because we love our families ask our students -- and students and calling you on you to commit to the following steps, raises are critical for educator and school staff to staff our school and meet the needs of our students much please, we need in power to work for us. hire more substitutes and increase pay and benefits and increase the parent educator and proposition a substitute pay immediately and we're fighting for the schools that our students deserve, thank you. this is your chance to find your heart in san francisco with someone special. golden gate park's largest body of water is this lake, a popular spot for strolling and paddling around in boats, which can be rented. created in 1893, it was designed foreboding and -- for boating. it is named for the wild strawberries that once flores. a pleasant trail follows the perimeter past huntington falls, 110 foot waterfall. two bridges connect the trail to the island. the climb to the hills summit, the highest point in golden gate park at more than four hundred feet. you can get quinces of the western side of the city through -- glimpes of the western side of city through a thick trees. the lake is ada accessible. it has a peaceful atmosphere where you can enjoy a warm day. walk along the lake and watched many ducks, and swans, and seagulls. it is a tranquil spot to stroll, enjoy each other's company, and sail away. many couples come here to take a ride around the lake, floating under the bridges, past the pavilion and waterfall. for a quiet getaway, it makes for a memorabl
