arrived in san francisco as one of the first ship to bring 49ers ashore. legend has it, newcomers would jump ship before it could even drop anchor in san francisco bay. within a few days, most of the nianic crew abandoned her for the gold rush too. so the captain sailed the niantic as close to land as they could get, running her aground on the shore where clay and montgomery streets now meet. there, the niantic became a store, offices and hotel. somebody cut a door in her side and inscribed rest for the weary and storage for trunk, at last, a great fire in 1851 burned much of the niantic so the san franciscoians built the niantic whole known as one of the best in the city. then it too burned down in 1872. the next incarnation, the stone niantic atop the old ship and hotel would not burn, instead, it was toppled by the earthquake of 1906. now surely any rational city would give up at this point, right? no. in fact, you might know where the niantic rest to this day, right at the foot of trans america building, an iconic part of our city where shavo is invest

i'm born and raised here in san francisco. the child that grew up going to the center around the corner, but that's a street. i have been working with friendship palace for more than 30 years. village sf was the vision of our late founder, helen walk a zoo. who dreamed of a place where native people i would do would not simply survive but thrive. the village itself is that place it's that vision. it's actually a citywide initiative, but it starts with a six story building that's going to go right behind you. that will offer social services, medical, dental behavior, health care. cultural space, youth and elder programming. a women's lodge dedicated to mothers and recovery with their young children. affordable housing and food sovereignty programs throughout the city. the village s f is a place where native peoples displaced from their homelands or far from family. can reclaim a community to call their own. the village will be a place where native peoples can access vital support services. but more than that will be a place whe

i too, was born and raised in san francisco. and i was born and raised in the fillmore community where the community really took care of one another. but sadly, we saw a lot of change. and in fact the public housing development i was living in plaza east. those buildings were torn down. and there were over three a little bit over 300 units, and they were torn down and only 200 were built. it was clear that many of the people who i grew up with who were moved to places like vallejo and fairfield and other locations, it was clear that there were no plans to ensure that they were able to return to their home. and when i think about the challenges of the past and what san francisco has done to make it very difficult to build housing and to be very aggressive about providing housing opportunities. i am always reminded of my own experience as a way to ensure that we don't do that for the future. we know that homelessness and the challenges around affordability for housing in this city have continued to persist. mostly because of our i

born and raised in san francisco. cable car equipment, technically i'm a transit operator of 135 and work at the cable car (indiscernible) and been here for 22 years now. i grew up around here when i was a little can i. my mom used to hang in china town with her friends and i would get bored and they would shove me out of the door, go play and find something to do. i ended up wandering down here when i was a kid and found these things. ♪ [ music ] ♪ ♪ >> fascinated by them and i wanted to be a cable car equipment from the time i was a little kid. i started with the emergency at the end of 1988 and drove a bus for a year and a half and i got lucky with my timing and got here at cable car and at that time, it really took about an average five to maybe seven years on a bus before you could build up your seniority to come over here. basically, this is the 1890s verse ever a bus. this is your basic public transportation and at the time at its height, 1893, there were 20 different routes ask this powerhouse, there -- and th

, we would lose something in san francisco. we would lose part of its heart and soul. it wouldn't be san francisco without cable cars. [bell ringing] >> >> shared spaces have transformed san francisco's streets and sidewalks. local business communities are more resilient and our neighborhood centers are more vibrant and lively. fire blocks and parking lanes can be for seating and merchandising and other community activities. we're counting on operators of shared spaces to ensure their sites are safe and accessible for all. when pair mets, firefighters and other first responders arrive at a scene, they need clear visual access to see the building entrances, exits and storefront windows from the street. that means parklets should be transfer in the areas above inches above the sidewalk level. it's best if these areas are totally unobstructed by transparent materials may be okay. you can check with fire department staff to make sure your site meets visibility requirements. emergency response crews and their equipment need to be mo
