born and raised in san francisco.le car equipment technically i'm a transit operator of 135 and work at the cable car (indiscernible) and been here for 22 years now. i grew up around here when i was a little can i. my mom used to hang in china town with her friends and i would get bored and they would shove me out of the door, go play and find something to do. i ended up wandering down here when i was a kid and found these things. ♪ [ music ] ♪ ♪ >> fascinated by them and i wanted to be a cable car equipment from the time i was a kid. i started with the emerge1988 and drove a bus for a year and a half and i got lucky with my timing and got here at cable car and at that time it really took about an average five to maybe seven years on a bus before you could build up your seniority to come over here. basically, this is the 1890s verse ever a bus. this is your basic public transportation and at the time at its height, 1893 there were 20 different routes ask this powerhouse, there -- and this powerhouse there were 15 of t

all this stuff is creating change, and it's easy to bash san francisco and to use san francisco as an example. it's another thing to actually roll up your sleeves and do the work. and in fact, many of these people who continue to bash our city are not folks who are out on the streets. every single day seeing it visibly for themselves. are there problems? yes. but to use san francisco consistently as an example when this is happening in far worse than other cities around this country, is just wrong. but we still have to continue to do the work necessary to get to a better place, and that is starting to happen. >> it is certainly not unique to san francisco. but again, as you talked about the bashing, if you will, i do want to show this because it is today, elon musk uh, who is putting a lot of money before, you know, behind donald trump, just $45 million a month, right? just tweeted today that he's moving the former twitter now x headquarters to texas from san francisco, saying had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building again. certainly p

now here's the thing i want to give a facts what is happening in san francisco. and we know that people have been talking about public health and like in the major city challenges did you know that crime is down in 2023 and continuing to be one of the lowest crime rates we've seen in 10 years not including the pandemic and break-ins for cars continuing to decline significantly because of the resources and support that we gotten from our district attorney's office from our police department and all the incredible work that ma many of our city agencies to combat those issues and starting to see and feel a difference. is that perfect 90? no, but doubling down and working hard with the support of our downtown and union square ambassadors we are really changing the experience that people have when and come downtown but, you know, downtown can't be a place for retail it can't be a 9 to 5 has to be one of the to newest neighborhoods people live and work and play so we know a lot of great events how how many of you went to are going to first thursday that thursday? >> (c

i call the san francisco department of disability and

with sand the way that san francisco was and when you look at a map of san francisco have a unique streetd one of the thing is those streets started off in extremely long piers. but by 1875 they know they needed more so the ferry building was built and it was a long affair and the first cars turned around at the ferry building and picking up people and goods and then last night the street light cars the trams came to that area also. but by the late 1880s we needed something better than the ferry building. a bond issue was passed for $600,000. to build a new ferry building i would say 800 thousand for a studio apartment in san francisco they thought that was a grand ferry building had a competition to hire an architecture and choose a young aspiring architect and in the long paris and san francisco had grand plans for this transit station. so he proposed the beautiful new building i wanted it wider, there is none tonight. than that actually is but the price of concrete quitclaim two how and was not completed and killed. but it opened a greater claim and became fully operational before 1898

and feel the magic thank you all. >> francisco. >> (music). >> city and county of san francisco korean-american is one of the and preserve agrees in america we work with job seeker to make sure they're trained and able to enter the workforce by i work with the number of partners able to then recruit our residents from training and get a solidified trained up workforce the hospitality initiative started in 2012, we saw a need for culinary workers within san francisco is everything from hotels gift services to culinary training to also to security services as well as are jailer training is under the hospitality initiative umbrella and um, the goal so really try to make sure we have various training tracks for folks to answer within the industry and our program is about a tense week program about job readiness, you know, included with our kitchen work we teach life skills. >> to assess the program not only what my helped my life build. >> i come from a hardship to starting to connect again to changes, you know, and this is a second chance. >> why not to mess up on that and the program has supporte

and make san francisco what it is.some of the other speakers talked about displacement from san francisco and artists pushed out of the city. one they they can get back in is public transit on bart. we know if we don't make the improvements, the people left where a unsafe and dirty system are those that dont have other choices. somebody that looks like me and besides the fact i live six blocks that way, if i lived in the suburbs i can drive a car and park in a garage. those people have other options and exercise the options if we let the system crumble. but we know the people that need the tired the legacy fleets. the fleets when i was a kid no longer exist. we donated several to railroad museums and art projects, but you will only have new fleet of the future cars which are much easier to clean, which allows us to double down on the cleaning. they have information and screens so people can tell where they are going and they are much more friendly for people with disabilities d people with bikes. those kind of things.

no matter where you are in san francisco.and if we're being honest, it was the videos of the smash and grabs downtown in union square that started to crush our reputation nationally and abroad. but it's all the way down to the local walgreens and cvs stores that are getting looted in our city almost on a daily basis. we need to completely change tack. we need to make public safety a priority. we also need a mayor who's going to be very prolific. as i will be to say, we support our law enforcement officers here in san francisco. we support their careers. we thank them every day for putting their lives on the line for us as residents of san francisco, that approach has not existed. our current mayor defunded the police. our current mayor has turned her back on the police department and our firefighters time and time again. we need a different approach out of the mayor's office. and i look forward to bringing that. all right. >> again, i think the mayor's office probably has is looking at different data and would say differently

now here's the thing i want to give a facts what is happening in san francisco. and we know that people have been talking about public health and like in the major city challenges did you know that crime is down in 2023 and continuing to be one of the lowest crime rates we've seen in 10 years not including the pandemic and break-ins for cars continuing to decline significantly because of the resources and support that we gotten from our district attorney's office from our police department and all the incredible work that ma many of our city agencies to combat those issues and starting to see and feel a difference. is that perfect 90? no, but doubling down and working hard with the support of our downtown and union square ambassadors we are really changing the experience that people have when and come downtown but, you know, downtown can't be a place for retail it can't be a 9 to 5 has to be one of the to newest neighborhoods people live and work and play so we know a lot of great events how how many of you went to are going to first thursday that thursday? >> (c

we are looking for people who work and live in san francisco who love san francisco and really want toout and be involved and be part of the change. the change for the positive. as he said, our current class, the class of 2024 just finished up last month right here at city hall. they were studying civic engagement and we kick off our 40 class this coming september. i just wanted to mention that myself, i'm the executive director and fairly new to the role. been doing it just about a year now, but before me, a woman ran the program for 35 years and she is here today so i wanted to just honor diane easten who ran leadership san francisco. diane.
