in 1540, francisco vasquez the de coronado came up on an expedition to introduce spanish rule to new mexico and introduced agriculture to the pueblo indians. in 1598, he came up to establish a presence of the spanish in new mexico. he said the pueblo indians were growing chilies under the spanish agriculture, because before then, the pueblo indians grew them in what we call a waffle system, they had little squares to catch the rainwater. the spanish introduced irrigation to bring water from the river to irrigate fields, and so, they had already incorporated that into their chilies, so we have had chilly e beans growing here for a long time. then, in the late 1800s, when it got founded, we had a professor here named foggy in garcia -- favian garcia that was our very first graduating class and our very first horticulturist. his mission was to find new crops for the farmers to grow, and at that time, they were growing cotton, corn, alfalfa for cattle, and that was it. he began to look at a lot of different horticultural crops, fruit trees, sweet onions, he brought in seed from spain tha

. >>> san francisco's mayor is telling the city's transit agency to shape up and tonight she's put the chief on notice. joe vasquez is live with the letter demanding significant change and fast. >> reporter: i've got a copy of the letter right here. the mayor has a list of problems she calls them challenges along the system over the last few weeks. the summer has so gone so far off the rails the san francisco mayor sent a letter today telling the director she has quote serious concerns about the transit agency's performance. the mayor cited a series of delays following the decision to schedule so many drivers in training at the same time. a hiring bench increased the number of operators by 10% but then those new drivers also had to be trained. a major construction project at the twin peaks tunnel caused more train operators to divert from their normal routes in order to run a bus bridge at the tunnel. more delays. then after a worker died on the tunnel project site we learned the contractor failed to disclose serious passed violations. in her letter the mayor said quote bottom line they must be more dependable. th

francisco street. police try to arrest teenage salesgirl she ends up in the back of an ambulance. >> a witness says the suspect was pushed hard against a police car. joe vasquez reports, tonight police are explaining their use of force. >> reporter: cell phone video shows the immediate aftermath of a police use of force incident on market street. a young woman was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. >> i saw the cops pulling this girl towards the car and they had her hands behind her back and slammed her on the car hood really hard. >> he didn't see what preceded the arrest but was disturbed to see officers slam her against the police car. >> she was pretty much laying there after they slammed her on the hood. after about 2 to 3 minutes they picked her up and she was completely limp. >> a san francisco police department spokesman said this started when an officer approached a woman who had a warrant out for herself but then they say she resisted arrest. quote during this struggle the suspect assaulted two officers by spitting in their faces, a use of force to prevent the subject from spitting at the officers again, end quote. you can see a firefight
