i'm frank mallicoat. it is 4:30. and we begin with some developing news that could cause big problems with the commute this morning. >> a major traffic mess in the east bay. anne makovec is in oakland. that's where northbound interstate 880 is closed right now. >>> reporter: traffic is being diverted on 980 right now, right in downtown oakland. a major accident has shut down 880 at 7th. you can see the scene here behind me there. right now they are trying to clean up about 200 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled after a car hit another car that spun into a big rig. that's what lost its load at that point. all of that diesel on the ground. it was a hit-and-run. one of the drivers of one of the vehicles started it and took off on foot. so they are still looking for that person. we know another person was transported to the hospital. the extent of the injuries is still unclear. here's how people describe what happened. >> there was a reckless driver going northbound on 880 approaching 7th street in the oakland area, and

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. we start with a tanker truck that crashed on the san mateo bridge. it shut down lanes at 10:30 this morning. it was carrying oxygen tanks when it crashed into a wall midspan and burst into flames. firefighters got the flames out and closed lanes as they cleaned up. there is no estimated time of when the bridge will re-open. it is snarling traffic in the area. the truck didn't hit anyone else and no one was hurt. >>> two robberies outside a bart station left victims shot and police searching for clues. anne makovec on how these crimes may be connected. >>> reporter: the people who were robbed were just coming offer the staircase from the bart station and heading under that overpass here on tennyson road. it is just dark and hidden enough for two men to try to steal some cash but in one case, they took it a step further and shot a man in front of his wife. >> the robbery in and of itself with a handgun is a cowardly act. and once you have gotten what you want, what you have asked for an

i'm frank mallicoat. it is the last day on the job for hundreds of san jose city employees. >> more than 250 city workers are losing their jobs because of budget cuts including dozens of police officers. as anne makovec reports, this comes at a dangerous time for the city. isn't that right, anne. >> reporter: that is right. the murder rate in san jose is on pace to be the highest in 30 years. a lot of that is gang crime and with 70 officers turning in their badges today, we have heard from both police officers and the mayor saying people have reason to be concerned. >> it is very difficult. it's a dark day in the history of san jose pd. >> reporter: a dark day that even with contract concessions and months of negotiations could not be avoided. the last day on the city's payroll for 70 officers in san jose. >> anytime that you dilute personnel in the field, response times could go up and we're going to do everything we can to avoid that but it's a realistic possibility. >> reporter: it amounts to about 6%
