i'm frank mallicoat. anne makovec is on the scene of breaking news at a fire in alameda. firefighters had to rescue a person, i understand, trapped on a balcony of that burning apartment. >> reporter: i spoke from one person who jumped from a second floor balcony. everybody appears to be okay. here's a closer look at the fire which started about 2:45 a.m. on briggs avenue. there are four apartments in the building. several people who live there believe it was started by a mentally ill man who lived there. he was taken to an institution and returned home yesterday. suddenly overnight they heard a small explosion coming from his second floor apartment. many saw smoke coming into their apartments. that is when the one woman i spoke with jumped off of her balcony. people are very nervous right now that everything they own has been destroyed because there is significant damage as you can see from this video to that building. we'll let you hear from some of the people who live here coming up in the next half hour. live in alameda, anne makovec, kpix 5. >>> harsh weather in much

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:30. kpix 5 is at the oakland colosseum where a man is hurt breaking the fall of a woman who jumped from the upper deck after the raiders game. >> reporter: investigators say this good samaritan actually led at the woman as she fell from 45 feet up above. they are not hesitating in calling him a hero. this is the restricted section where the sheriffs office says the woman yuped off the ledge and landed on a fan after the game. >> apparently the good samaritan saw there was something happening above him and he stopped and tried to convince this individual not to jump and tried to break her fall. >> that man is a 61 year old marine corps reserveist, deputies say he was able to break her 45-foot fall that sent them both to the hospital. she's in very critical condition. he will likely survive his injuries. >> our thoughts were with all of the individuals that error affected, the two injured, anybody that may have happened to see it. safety and security of our guests is most important. >> inve

i'm frank mallicoat.t is 5:30. the tech sector's biggest ipo since facebook is happening today. twitter is making its wall street debut opening on the new york stock exchange at $26 a share and kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is here in san francisco and cate, financial experts are expecting some big things from twitter. >> reporter: well, we're hearing frank if all 70 million shares are sold today, that means the company's ipo will raise a little more than $2 billion making it the biggest ipo since facebook, $16 billion last year. >>> reporter: twitter may be a fifth the size of social media giant facebook but financial experts say it's worth more. >> the key for investors is long term. and if they keep moving the revenue in those big double- digit increments year owe-year, the profits will start to grow. >> reporter: the company isn't anticipated to make money until 2015 and reported a loss of more than $64 million in september and slowing user growth. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks says wha

i'm frank mallicoat. let's get right over to lawrence karnow. the hi-def doppler radar is lighting up again, lawrence. >> guys, it is really ripping around the bay area right now. our hi-def doppler radar lit up with yellows, oranges and even reds. look at this system as it begins to make its way onshore. quiet early on but now it's ripping outside. you can see yellows, oranges and reds now sliding into parts of the east bay. you can see that into oakland near richmond. some strong storms there. along san ramon along the 680 some very heavy rainfall and we have had reports of flooding on some of the local roadways so be very careful. on the peninsula strong shores moving onshore. along the 101 very heavy rainfall but maybe even more importantly, looks like we are going to see some stronger storms developing over the next few minutes here. you can see this next wave just off the coastline. that is going to be pushing onshore. it may be moving a little further to the south in along the peninsula and headed toward the south bay so you can see san j

i'm frank mallicoat. a big day and we have live team coverage of twitter's launch. cate caugiran is live in san francisco. first we go to kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks on what looks like a good start so far. >> reporter: i would say so. it was appropriate to see patrick stewart ringing the opening bill on the nys settlement. this morning for twitter. former "star trek" next generation actor doing so. the stock has been in warp drive since the beginning nearly doubling in value after starting out at $26 a share raising $1.8 billion. right now twitter's shares are up by 85%. and the company has a market value right now of more than $25 billion. this all happening even though the market is down. a lot of social media stocks have been selling off, facebook, yelp, groupon, linkedin, some of that money going out from them into twitter. after a record close for the dow yesterday it's down more than 100. >> thank you, jason brooks. >>> cate caugiran is live at twitter headquarters here in san francisco and cate, i guess not everyone is excited about the launc

good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. here's one of the tornadoes caught on tape as it was ripping through towns destroying anything in its path. two more bodies were found in the last few hours. now at least eight people are confirmed dead after dozens of these twisters touched down and more than 400 homes completely flattened. cbs reporter ko im joins us from washington, illinois. >> reporter: and what you see behind me is just a glimpse of what this unusual late season storm was able to unleash in this small town, blocks and blocks and debris and damage. streets being patroled in a sprawling neighborhood in washington, illinois. the twister ripped through the town wiping out hundreds of homes. >> oh, my god, this thing is huge. >> reporter: the national weather service says dozens of twisters touched down across the midwest sunday leaving behind destruction in at least 12 states. illinois was hit hardest. jeff lehman was outside and barely got to safety. >> in a matter of seconds you turn around and it was right on top

good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. michelle is on assignment. let's get right to meteorologist lawrence karnow tracking the rain on his hi-def doppler radar. lawrence. >> yeah. it's been since september 21st that we had some measurable rainfall in the bay area. but now finally a cold front moving into town and we are getting a little soaker going outside right now. you can see on our hi-def doppler radar, we have some showers continuing to move on through started out north bay early on. now it's sagging south. you see the yellows and the oranges, that's a moderate amount of rainfall now falling into walnut creek and into orinda. also seeing that making its way across the bridge. you can see it back into san francisco. some lighter showers falling there. and then you move it along the peninsula, not a lot of rain just yet but just off the coastline we have some more rain coming our way and it looks like, well, a pretty good soaker into the afternoon. in fact, right now, let's check out some of that outside right now. you can see a couple of raind
