. >> happy friday, i'm frank mallicoat. asiana airlines under orders now to stop flying to sfo at least for a little while. kpix 5's anne makovec is at sfo with details of the airline's punishment for last year's deadly crash-landing. anne. >> reporter: and the next flight, the next asiana flight from here at sfo to seoul, south korea, is still scheduled to depart at noon according to the asiana airlines website. flight 211 is still supposedly on time and set for today. so when this suspension goes into effect is unclear. this news all came down from a south korean news agency saying this is punishment for the asiana plane crash here at sfo in the summer of 2013. the south korean government imposing a 45-day suspension of all asiana flights to sfo. the korean transportation ministry says asiana violated safety regulations when the boeing 777 crashed know a seawall at sfo and slipped down the runway. three passengers were killed. more than 180 were hurt. and that crash is widely being blamed on the pilot. >> in this instance

. >> i am frank mallicoat. firefighters spent hours pouring water on a century-old church following sunday services yesterday. >> right now that church is in danger of collapsing. kpix 5's keit do is on the scene. >> reporter: firefighters have some bracing up on the walls here fencing around this structure. they have cordoned off the streets as well. they think the walls are unstable and if it goes down they don't want anybody near it. we have dramatic video of the fire. afternoon mass had gotten out around 2 p.m. yesterday. the pastor spotted the flames and shut off the electricity and called 911. the flames spread quickly to the roof. it went to four alarms. 100 firefighters were on scene here by the end of it spraying water from all directions. some of the parishoners who have been here for generations were stunned. >> this is my life. i come here every sunday. it's our church. the whole neighborhood. i was baptized here. my kids are baptized here. my mom came here. i am just brokenhearted. i don't know wha

i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:30.eloping news as protests continue in ferguson, missouri and elsewhere. crowds of protestors braved snow in ferguson, carried signs through the streets there. >> "hands up, don't shoot!" >> as you might imagine that created traffic problems but the protests were less destructive than the previous two nights after the grand jury decided not to indict officer darren wilson for michael brown's death. ferguson had only two arrests last night. >>> meanwhile, in oakland, police arrested 35 people last night and chased vandals around the city. chopper 5 over oakland when one group went after a cvs store on 20th and webster. you can see the windows smashed. >> and we also saw protestors trying to smash windows at a rite aid in the heart of downtown oakland. this is 14th and broadway. police in riot gear showed up and put an end to that. >> and then the crowd headed down the street to the "oakland tribune" building. protestors sprayed graffiti and broke windows. some of the protestors told us th

i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:00. >>> thousands of kaiser permanente nurses are set to walk off the job in about an hour for a two-day strike. ryan takeo joins us live from walnut creek with what patients can expect the next couple of days. ryan. >> reporter: well, they can expect a lot of temporary nurses to try to fill in the gaps. we are talking about 18,000 nurses in total across the kaiser spectrum. now, keep in mind the nurses union they are focusing on the lack of ebola preparedness at kaiser. kaiser says that the union is working without a contract. now, that's why they say as many as 18,000 nurses will go on strike starting at 7 a.m. the issue of money hasn't come up yet in contract talks. the stalemate after three months of bargaining, operational issues. one big one, the union wants kaiser to fill about 2,000 open nursing spots from the past couple of years. the nurses rallying today will focus on poor training procedures, specifically for training to deal with ebola. the california hospital ass

i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:00. polls in california open in an hour and one of the bay area's most crowded contests is oakland's mayoral race. ryan takeo says we won't have a final tally today and it might take a couple of days. >> reporter: that's because of the rank choice voting system used in oakland and some other cities in the east bay. we are in front of the registrar's office where they will be counting votes today. this is a crowded field. we're talking about 15 candidates running for oakland mayor. five have separated from the pack. jean quan looks to fend off current city council members libby schaaf and rebecca kaplan. professor joe tuman and businessman bryan parker. a recent poll found any one of the five front-runners could win thanks to the city's rank choice voting system. that system allows voters to select up to three candidates in order of preference when marking ballots. it's meant to eliminate the need for a separate runoff but it takes the registrar a lot of time to count the extra votes. >> f

i'm frank mallicoat. happy friday.rly 6:30 now. >>> asiana airlines is getting a no-fly zone and it's san francisco. kpix 5's anne makovec is at sfo this morning which is set to be a nondestination for the airliner for a while anyway. anne. >> reporter: yeah. and when this is going to kick in is still unclear this morning. likely within 6 months but as of today there is an asiana airlines flight from sfo to seoul scheduled to leave at noon. that is asiana airlines flight 211. still listed as on time on the asiana airlines website. now, this is punishment for the asiana plane crash here at sfo in the summer of 2013. the south korean government is imposing a 45-day suspension of all asiana flights to sfo. that's according to a south korean news agency. the korean transportation ministry says asiana violated safety rules when the boeing 777 crashed into a seawall at sfo slipping down the runway. three passengers were killed and more than 180 were injured. the crash is being blamed in part on the pilot. >> the errors of th
