right now, there is a group of about a couple hundred people here at frank ogawa plaza.ple are waiting for the day-long event to begin. they are gathering for music and some of the opening ceremonies here. later on, they will be having workshops here at frank ogawa plaza and oakland city hall. some people lined up as early as 7:00 this morning to register. the nonprofit group oakland natives gives back has organized this backpack giveaway five years in a row. a thousand kids will get a backpack loaded with school supplies later this afternoon, around 3:30. but first, the students and parents have to go through some workshops. workshops are on topics like eating healthy, staying focused, workshop for parents on getting more involved with their kids, and for the older high school kids, there are classes and tips on getting the ready for college. organizers have seen an increase in demand for this event. this year, 200 more parents and kids registered in advance to be here. >> we've definitely seen an increase as the years go by. maybe it's because of popularity, but i thin
