i went on a lot of different trips from frankfort, kentucky, to new orleans, pennsylvania, south carolinad some trips ended up with nothing. but i wanted to trace any thread i could to try to find out about these women's histories, and i had to think expensively and think about, in what ways might i be able to locate any evidence of their existence? how might these women have shown up in records from that time period? a lot of slave trader letters, account books, directories, censuses, a lot of court records, and it is fascinating, the geographic reach of some of these things. so for instance, there were many, many slave traders who had children with enslaved women who sent those children to pennsylvania, ohio or massachusetts and in one case, michigan. so these family networks turn into these broad, geographic networks and in some cases, even social networks. these families, these late traders, their families knew one another. in one case, i found evidence of the enslaved women communicating, even after they had moved apart geographically. so trying to trace this family networks across s
