franklin roosevelt went on the air the night before, now this was the 5th. this was supposed to have been the original d-day. he knew, very few others knew. apparently the vice president did not know. it's not clear the secretary of state knew, although roosevelt routinely kept the secretary of state often out of the loop. secretary of the navy, secretary of war did know. but it was a very small group, and roosevelt went on the road because he was announcing the fall of rome which had taken place the day before in the italian campaign. here is a reason to celebrate and, of course, while he's giving that speech he know that is even as he's speaking troops are going ashore in normandy but says nothing about it until the next night when he says when i spoke to you yesterday about the fall of rome, i knew our boys were heading ashore but could not tell but it until now. so that was kept very close. it is surprising that the vice president didn't know given in particular the president's health, but it was a deliberate effort to keep that very close hold to as few people as possible. >> from facebook, mr. sym
