marshals joined the hunt and assisted franklin county sheriff's department and the virginia state troopers in trying to find the suspect once he was identified. they all did an outstanding job. they hit the ground running early this morning. left no stones unturned. they had interviews, they had vehicles in play. they talked to a lot of people. apparently all of our assets were deployed from the u.s. marshal service, so it did come to an end. and again, i'm happy it ended that way as opposed to another vicious shooting, which was committed early this morning. >> lenny depaul, stay with us. this was obviously a large-scale manhunt throughout the state of virginia. pete williams, our justice correspondent, i understand you have some breaking news about how this suspect was apprehended? >> reporter: the virginia state police have given us a little more detail now on how this all ended here. they say that it was about 11:30 this morning eastern time when virginia state police saw the suspect vehicle heading east on interstate 66. they turned on their emergency lights. they tried to pull the su

marshals and our agency, of course, was assisting the virginia state troopers and franklin county, atint it's, you know, pretty much over with respect to finding somebody. you know, he's identified at this point. we turned him upside-down, looked at everything about him. his history, twitter, facebook pages were firing up. i tip my hat to both of those networks. social media certainly cooperated with law enforcement. they were able to utilize that to their advantage in the world of technology. we bring a lot of state-of-the-art equipment to the table and, of course, forget her name, virginia state trooper, she fired up her license plate reader and was able to suck in those plates. and she saw he went by him two minutes prior to that. she puts it out. the cavalry shows up and, of course, it was consistent to his mental makeup and how this whole thing ended yesterday afternoon. >> let's talk about the license plate locator because that is a piece of technology i would say is probably fairly recent in terms of how detailed it can be. it can get those numbers and figure out where the car

marshal service, the fbi, the virginia department of emergency management and the police department. i can't begin to thank those agencies and their personnel enough for their efforts. at 6:43 a.m. today, the franklinounty sheriff's office received a 911 call concerning shots fired at bridgewater plaza near smith mountain lake. a wbdj-tv news crew was conducting a live interview at the plaza with ms. gardner when vester lee flanagan ii, age 41, of roanoke, suddenly appeared and approached them and started shooting. alison parker, age 24 and adam ward, age 27 died at the scene. both parker and ward were residents of roanoke, virginia. let us not forget, they grew up in this area, they were part of our community. we don't want to forget that. ms. gardner was transported to the memorial hospital where she is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. flanagan then fled. before deputies arrived on the scene. the franklin county sheriff's office with the assistance of the state police immediately began a search operation in the area to locate the shooting suspect. shortly before 11:00, roanoke city police department located flanagan's 2009 ford mustang at the regional -- roanoke regional airport. t
