and for this we get franklin pierce. how do we get franklin? who is he? well, pierce comes from a political family, from the state of new hampshire. his father had been governor of the state. he had served in state government, served in the u.s. house, in the u.s. senate, got a lot of experience but he actually had not been in office for about the last ten years. his jane did not like his political career. so let's go back to new hampshire. do something else. so he didn't run for office again until the presidency, but he did run the democratic party. he was the chair of the democratic party in the state of new hampshire, which kept him in the mix. and then in 52, he's basically hoping maybe at the convention he might get the vice presidential slot. well, as it turns out, james buchanan, one of those who is up for potential nomination, lewis cass is up for the nomination. those democrats that two thirds rule that requirement had to get to two thirds at the convention. it really tough to do to get the nomination. it's one of the reasons why we get these dark

good time for the willard's henry willard beck pierce when he was running for president and when franklin pierce won president, pierce became the first president to visit the willard hotel the willard would house many almost all of them from that then the hotel was called the residence of presidents in addition to having congressmen, senate and businessmen stay at the hotel the village decided to the foreign dignitaries a particular was the japanese delegation. the japanese had never left their homeland and were headed to the united to visit with president buchanan and to sign the treaty of amity commerce.that at the time there was no blair house to house foreign dignitaries and that task fell to the willard congress to appropriate its $50,000 for the willard to refurbish and redecorate to accommodate our guests from japan. rooms were re carpeted with red carpets. there was a pantry built in kitchens and then a floor of 60 rooms was given to the on. the japanese entered through ladies entrance on 14th street and security hired to help take of any wayward what they called customs of bathing in pr

oh, i was just going to add probably the saddest story in the book is of jean pierce franklin pierce's wife she had lost two two sons before. they were five years old. and she was already kind of hysterical about her remaining son, benji. and it turned out that she was very, very on interested in politics. and was she actually prayed that her husband wouldinpresidency? he did win. and they were coming home from a funeral for her uncle and they were in a train wreck. and her son benji was killed. she saw it and it was, you know, a ghastly, ghastly accident. she never recovered. she did not go to the inauguration. and her husband did mention it at the inauguration that that he was a sense ofhe did not he did not swear he was the only president that affirmed and said of war. and there was no bible. for it. but she her story really was tragic. she spent most of her time in the white house writing letters to her dead son, which she continued doing until she finally died in 1863. it was really a tragic, tragic story when we found out that those letters that she was writing to her dead son we
